_Director of the Library

This position provides leadership and supervision for the development and delivery of library services at all Columbia State instructional locations.

Essential Functions:

1.Plan for, provide, and supervise library services required to support the courses, programs, and degrees offered at all sites and centers.
2.Guide collection development for all materials purchased and works cooperatively with Columbia State Community College faculty, staff, and students in reviewing, evaluating, and recommending materials.
3.Maintain appropriate records and prepare reports, as required by the institution and/or other agencies.
4.Monitor and evaluate library services.
5.Supervise and evaluate library staff at all locations.
6.Determine staffing needs and work with the vice president of academic services in recruiting, hiring, and evaluating staff with an emphasis on maintaining diversity.
7.Develop and manage the library budgets.
8.Keep abreast of professional trends and technological developments relating to educational support services and guide implementation of techniques which would strengthen library services.
9.Recommend termination of staff to the vice president for academic services.
10.Facilitate the resolution of student grievances related to library policies, procedures, and personnel.
11.Assure continued compliance of the areas supervised with criteria for accreditation of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
12.Interpret and assure implementation and compliance with Tennessee Board of Regents and Columbia State policies relevant to library operations and recommend changes, when needed in policies.
13.Establish and maintain liaison relationships with appropriate external organizations and agencies.

Supplemental Functions:

1.Participate in institutional and, as appropriate community activities related to fulfillment of the college and library purposes.
2.Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements of the Position

Job Specifications:

Education, Training and Experience Required:

1.Master's degree in Library Science or appropriate related field.
2.Five years experience in postsecondary library or learning resources center.
3.Up to date experience with library management technology.
4.Two years library administrative experience, preferably in a postsecondary setting.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Work Characteristics:

1.Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the general public..
2.Ability to work effectively as a team member.
3.Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
4.Demonstrated leadership skills
5.Demonstrated ability in planning, evaluation, and budgeting.
6.Working knowledge of modern library operations and procedures.
7.Knowledge of Library of Congress classification and OCLC cataloging.
8.Working knowledge of integrated library systems.

Working Conditions:

1.Normal sitting and movement in a library environment, including bending, lifting, climbing, and pushing carts loaded with books (to 100 pounds).
2.Visual acuity sufficient to management typical library tasks
3.Travel to off-campus instructional locations and to other areas for meetings and other job-related activities.
4.Work hours vary, may include day and evening hours and weekends.
