Director of Career and Leadership Development
The Director of Career and Leadership Development serves as the leading expert for career, internship, and professional development opportunities for students and alumni. The Director develops a comprehensive long-term strategy and provides leadership and direction for an innovative career development and planning department. This position and department supports students by providing resources and opportunities to encourage career and major exploration, self-assessment, build professional networks, and develop post-graduate career and educational plans.
In collaboration with their staff, this position will determine annual and ongoing priorities for the office, working diligently with the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs/Dean of Students to bring these priorities to fruition. The Director will also work closely with the Director of Leadership and Experiential Learning to maintain and create leadership and experiential learning initiatives which is a strategic priority for our institution. Areas that are supported by the Director of Career and Leadership include, recruiting and hiring of approximately 1700 on campus student employers (including Federal Work Study), reporting (i.e. FISAP, One Year Out Survey) and assessment of programs, events and services for continued growth and improvement, supporting and enhancing the school liaison model, enhancing internship and full-time recruitment for students and alumni, facilitating workshops for curriculum, trainings of student groups, and career counseling. In addition, the Director of Career and Leadership will:
- Provide visionary, strategic, and administrative leadership for a comprehensive career development curriculum that enables students to identify and pursue their post-graduate goals (career and/or continued education)
- Manage the delivery of individual and group counseling efforts, workshops and class presentations to prospective students, current students, and alumni
- Enhance career service delivery in a school liaison model (one career staff members serving 1-2 schools each)
- Collaborate with the leadership (Deans and Assistant Deans) of the seven Colleges and support career liaison model
- Oversee and enhance internship and post-graduate employment opportunities for students through the delivery of comprehensive employer services, including on-campus recruitment, networking events and job fairs, as well as on-going employer development activities
- Develop and assess learning outcomes for programs and services
- Develop and implement the official assessment of the post-graduation activities of TCNJ graduates through a one-year-out survey
- Manage the implementation of appropriate technology into career programming
- Help to prepare the annual operating budget and monitor monthly activity of three additional budgets
- Provide strategic and administrative leadership to the student employment area
- Supervise three professional staff members and a graduate intern support and provide continued professional development for department
- Develop and foster relationships with departments, staff, faculty and other internal constituents to create opportunities for collaboration to support college and departmental vision/goals
- Participate, attend and present at National, Regional and local professional associations to market and promote TCNJ Career and Leadership Development office
- Research, evaluate and implement career related best practices to support student outcomes
- Outreach and relationship development with external entities (employers, alumni, government, etc.) to encourage partnerships with TCNJ to create job/internship opportunities, program development, fundraising and engagement with the college.
At least eight years of professional experience in university/college setting or in business in a human resources or training and development function is required. Full-time experience on a college/university student services staff is preferred. Important knowledge and capabilities necessary include career counseling techniques, knowledge of job trends and career development skills, effective public relations and networking abilities, and understanding the need for infusing leadership into career development.
