Overview

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The Assistant Director and Senior International Student Advisor works independently under the general supervision of the Director and is responsible for designing, developing, implementing and evaluating a full range of advising services which meet the international objectives of the university and the special needs of current and former non-immigrant international students. The incumbent serves as Lead for International Student Advising staff, serves as the SDSU’s Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) for Regulatory Compliance Affecting Non-immigrant students, and serves as a member of the ISC's leadership team.

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $6,335 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,351 - $7,633 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Possession of the below required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.

A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

  • Strong, demonstrable skills in oral and written communications, critical thinking, problem solving, program planning and program evaluation
  • Strong, demonstrable skills in designing and implementing programs, and in conducting group presentations
  • Strong, demonstrable skills in motivating staff and providing effective leadership
  • Strong demonstrable skills in researching, writing and editing highly complex informational materials
  • Ability to relate easily, effectively and equitably with students form diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Knowledge of foreign governments and their regulations affecting their students in the U.S.
  • Knowledge of SDSU policies, procedures and regulations
  • Extensive knowledge of financial and career related resources available to international students
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of federal regulations affecting non-immigrant students
  • Extensive knowledge of needs and objectives of cultural missions/agencies which financially sponsor international students
