General Summary of Position: The Student Support Staff is responsible for ongoing retention and student success initiatives and activities at the University in order to increase undergraduate retention and student success. Contributes information to functional strategic plans and reviews. Prepares and completes action plans in assigned areas. Manages overall caseload outcomes including production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards. Identifies and resolves problems; supports students and staff. The goal of the Diversity Nursing Scholars (DNS) program is to increase the number of diverse nursing students in the CON from the New Bedford area to have an ongoing pipeline of diverse nurses likely to be employed locally.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Tracks students identified as "at-risk" to make sure they receive support.
• Pro-actively tracks and provides advising, retention and success initiatives to DNS eligible undergraduate students
• Develops and implements retention plans for students who are on academic warning, academic probation and subject for dismissal and potential impact to financial aid.
• Contributes to a work environment of professional practice by encouraging innovation and collaboration; actualizing human caring; eliciting a commitment to excellence; demonstrating a respect for diversity; and using evidence-based practices for student success.
• Participates in university committees such as those devoted to enrollment management, retention, academic advising, etc.
• Develops and or deliver workshops on transition to university life to students in academic jeopardy.
• Provides general reports and summary analysis of collected student data to the deans, supervisors, Office of Academic Affairs in regard to retention, etc.
• Supports relationships with University and community partners by facilitating open channels of communication with partners, students, faculty, staff, other departments; resolving problems/complaints and/or channeling them to appropriate department for solution. Responsible for maintaining various program data bases utilizing several methods and technology tools as available. Create and generate reports that track, monitor and report on assessment or progress within the College of Nursing.
• Produces quality results by implementing plans and programs; evaluating new programs and
• technology; providing optimum learning environment for nursing students.
• Consults with housing to develop support programs in residency halls
• Maintains university legal requirements by adhering to policy, state laws; reporting requirements to
• HRSA grant
• Maintains nursing/professional and technical knowledge through scholarly presentations and publications;
• attending educational workshops; establishing personal networks; maintaining relationships with
• community groups, utilizing state-of-the-art practices; acting as role model for students
• Demonstrates cultural competencies and behaviors in all interactions
• Perform other duties and special assignments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s in nursing, social work, school counseling, education or related field

EXPERIENCE: Previous experience (2 or more years) in secondary or tertiary education or an equivalent combination of related training and relevant experience working with range of adult age groups.

Experience working with disadvantaged and minority groups. Experience working in post-secondary academic environment.

OTHER: Available during peak periods of the program activity to include occasional Saturday, Sunday or evening work (such as during Experience UMD, Open House, or College Freshmen Orientation, community activities related to grant outcomes).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, multitasking, and public-speaking skills
• Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with students from underserved populations
• Ability to facilitate the academic success of college students of a range of ages
• Ability to work with students both individually and in group settings
• Demonstrated ability to communicate well orally and in writing
• Working knowledge of basic office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database) and social media (blogs, Twitter, etc.) to facilitate student success
• Ability to collect and share data in an organized fashion
• Acts as a professional representative of the College and University at all times
• Understanding of the barriers faced by disadvantaged and minority groups
• Knowledge of strategies that support the academic outcomes of disadvantaged and minority students
• Ability to work collaboratively to achieve program outcomes

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's in nursing, social work, school counseling, post-secondary education or related field
• Previous experience, (3 or more years) working in school systems, community organizing, case management, and advising
• Working knowledge of regional high schools, community organizations, associated, and programs supporting the mission, goals, and objectives of the Diversity Nursing Scholars program
• Preferred candidate will represent the diversity of the community served in this grant
• Bilingual/bi-cultural, English/Spanish, or English/Portuguese
