Adult Education Instructor - ELAA (English Aquistion for Adults)

Position Summary

Provides instruction in English Language Acquisition for Adults (ELAA) to eligible students. Supports and facilitates student transitions to post-secondary education and careers. Works collaboratively with community agencies and College to support Adult Education for college and career readiness. This is a part-time instruction position. The position is eligible to participate in the Arizona State Retirement system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responds to inquiries from potential students and sets appointments for their registration and intake procedures.
  • Conducts intake process for new students including State intake form and prop 300 paperwork. Orients students to the program and helps schedule students for testing and classes.
  • Performs initial proficiency testing and scoring to determine proper placement in leveled classes using state mandated tests, currently the Test of Adult Basic Education- (TABE- CLAS-E).
  • Follows AZ Adult Ed ELL Teacher Standards to develop and provide direct instruction to students in small class settings that is clearly aligned to AZ Adult Ed Standards for English Language Acquisition.
  • Assesses students' progress throughout their participation in the program using the TABE- CLAS-E, and after scoring, uses score reports to forward results to support staff for data entry.
  • Refers students who may have learning difficulties and/or learning disabilities.
  • Updates and organizes student records regularly to ensure compliance with state mandates and for accurate database entry. Keeps accurate monthly attendance and forwards to support staff for data entry.
  • Attends regular program staff and/or instructor meetings, professional development workshops, and conferences.
  • Uses instructional technology and software in the classroom and implements blended learning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Skill in providing instruction in ELAA. Knowledge of Adult Education practices; and federal, state and local laws governing the Adult Education Services. Ability to work with people and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Familiarity with using basic instructional technology and Internet techniques in teacher fronted classes.

Minimum Qualifications

State Certification in adult education (within 60 days of hire). Bachelor's degree and 1 year of related professional experience; or any combination of education, including Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certificate or experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job and/or as approved by the Arizona State Department of Education and the College Human Resources department.

Preferred
Master's degree in TESL. Experience in English language educational settings. Experience with instructional technology. Experience in English language assessment.
