Basic Function

The job of a police officer is demanding and challenging, and requires more than just the ability to fire a weapon and chase down suspects! Besides the physical skills needed to be an effective officer, police officers need diplomacy, ethics, self discipline, and a good amount of human compassion. Their job involves assisting those in need, negotiating arguments and exercising patience, so it takes a well-balanced person to effectively hold a police officer’s job. Does this describe you?

NOVA is seeking to hire officers to fill high profile positions dedicated to keeping the NOVA College community crime and violence free! Your position will be dedicated to protecting the safety and property of the students, staff and visitors and keeping law and order in the community.

Through crime prevention activities, patrol, through investigation of all reported and suspected criminal activity, and through the enforcement of State laws. Dedicated officers will accomplish law and order by patrol efforts, by possible shift rotation, by interacting with the public in a fair and impartial manner regardless of situation, and by enforcing the laws and regulations through use of the same upstanding police powers as found in all other police departments in cities, towns, and counties in the Commonwealth.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education/Experience

High School Diploma; 21 years of age; American citizenship; Passes thorough background investigation in order to qualify for appointment as a police officer; HS degree or equivalent; Licensed driver with clean driving record; DCJS certification as a law enforcement officer.
Sworn experience as a police officer in Virginia

Preferred Qualifications

College Degree is desired.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

We are looking for loyal men and women with the ability to follow instructions, good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy skills. You must have the instinctive ability to demonstrate and understand the laws of the Commonwealth, local ordinances and College policies through performance of daily tasks. You must have the ability to testify in court proceedings.
