The Academic Advisor provides services that include: advising and assisting students in making decisions about majors and careers using a holistic approach, course selections appropriate to the student’s academic goals, monitoring academic performance, assisting in timely declaration of a major or pre-major, maintaining advising files, supporting students during academic and personal difficulty and making appropriate referrals as needed, identifying problems requiring intervention, and assisting with strategies for academic recovery as needed. Using a developmental approach, each Academic Advisor supports a caseload of approximately 175-200 students. To meet the needs of students in University College, advisors use a holistic approach to address student needs by establishing strong relationships with students to guide them in exploring areas of study and resources necessary to be successful. In addition to managing a caseload, the Academic Advisor will also serve on taskforces, work with other university departments, and execute events to meet the needs of specific populations University College serve.

Detailed Job DescriptionMinimum Requirements

Hold a Master’s degree

Have at least 1 year of work experience within a related university or college setting

List the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position

Possess strong communication,
interpersonal, problem-solving and effective organizational skills

Ability to manage time effectively in a busy environment

Preferred formal education, professional skills and work experience

Knowledge of counseling and student development theory

Experience working with transfer students, pre-professional students, military students, and knowledge of issues of these student populations

Experience in an academic advising setting in a university environment, preferably four-year institution

Preference for work experience related to administering services and programs related to supporting these student populations, program assessment and evaluation

Academic Affairs is the central division for implementing the mission of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Through effective academic policies, practices and programs, it provides leadership for excellence in teaching, scholarship and creative work as well as service to local, regional and global communities. The division allocates resources to recruit and retain faculty scholars and to create a learning environment that encourages students. As a part of the University’s commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, the University College (UC) was created to provide academic advising and support to UNCW students from the time of their admission until they declare their major, which is usually in their sophomore year. The UC supports students as they explore undergraduate curriculum and career paths, prepare to declare an appropriate major, and succeed in their transition to UNCW. The UC serves several student populations to include freshmen, select transfer, early college, military student, first-year spring admit and pre-professional students at UNCW.
