The University of Connecticut invites applications for a full-time position as a Technical Services Librarian (University Librarian 1/UCP 5 or University Librarian 2/UCP 7) in the School of Law, located in Hartford, CT. Under the general supervision of the Head of Technical Services, or her/his designee, the Technical Services Librarian will be primarily responsible for the ordering, receiving, and claiming of all collection materials selected for purchase. As an active member of the Technical Services department, the Technical Services Librarian is heavily involved in the unit’s commitment to improving efficiency, and the improving database integrity through special projects.

The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking, innovative librarian who can take initiative and function successfully in a collaborative environment. The Technical Services Librarian will collect metrics that will enhance our library’s ability to implement data-driven decision-making regarding collection maintenance. This position also performs a variety of database management duties related to acquisitions, serials, cataloging, electronic resources, and collection maintenance, and is the primary contact with legal publishers and vendors to address issues related to orders, receipts, billing, claims, and system functionality.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Orders new and continuing resources in a variety of formats, sets up corresponding records in the Law Library’s management system, follows up with vendors to monitor and track orders, and communicates updates to stakeholders as necessary
  • Receives new and continuing print resources within the Law Library’s management system, and prepares records for cataloging, physical processing, and shelving; assists in the preparation of electronic resource records for activation and access
  • Resolves internal and external problems related to Technical Services work, including, but not limited to, addressing issues with orders, receipts, billing, processing, claims, records, workflows, and system functionality with vendors and other Law Library staff
  • Provides record maintenance and database integrity to new, changed, ceased, or cancelled bibliographic, inventory, and order records within the Law Library’s management system throughout the lifecycles of library materials using departmental principles and guidelines
  • Maintains the Law Library’s working relationships with vendors and legal publishers
  • Manages the Law Library’s EDI and EDIFACT vendors
  • Troubleshoots collection access and discovery-related issues
  • Supports collection development maintenance by implementing committee decisions and communicating with vendors regarding cancelled subscriptions
  • Collects, maintains, and reports on the Law Library’s electronic resource COUNTER and SUSHI usage statistics
  • Collaborates with the Law Library Technical Services team to create, update, and maintain records that conform with nationally-accepted standards and current best practices, including bibliographic, order, resource, holdings, vendor, and item records
  • Creates, revises, and maintains Technical Services documentation for the Law Library
  • Prepares various departmental reports, files, records, and statistics, using queries and sets in the Law Library’s management system and analytics interface, to ensure compliance with accrediting agencies
  • Participates in professional development opportunities and represents the Law Library effectively at the University and in the local and national communities
  • May hire, train, and supervise library student assistants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited college or university
  • Recent work experience in a library setting
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal skills enabling one to work productively with colleagues, vendors, and the University-at-large
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to provide well-reasoned analysis using appropriate research and data resources; developing reports to support conclusions; and aptitude for detailed work
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, and best practices in e-resources management and assessment
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving efficiency and database integrity through special projects and improved procedures
  • Strong service orientation and an awareness of end-user needs as they affect technical services policies and procedures
  • Working knowledge of current and emerging technologies related to integrated library systems and discovery services
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekend hours

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Appointment at University Librarian 2 Level

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in an academic or law library
  • Experience managing projects for a department, team, or committee
  • Evidence of participation in library-related professional development activities at a local, regional, or national level

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

For Both Levels

  1. Recent Technical Services work experience in a library setting
  2. Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma and Primo
  3. Familiarity with COUNTER and/or SUSHI
  4. Familiarity with legal publishing

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full time position based at the UConn School of Law located in Hartford, CT. The anticipated start date is November 1, 2019. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
