About the PositionReporting to the Director of Benefits and Payroll, and receiving work lead direction from the Payroll Services Lead, the Payroll Technician performs duties under general supervision, but works independently to achieve specified outcomes. This position performs moderately complex duties related to processing the full range of payroll transactions for all categories of University employees and participates in special projects in support of the Unit.
Required Qualifications-High school diploma or equivalent
-Two years of payroll and personnel experience.
Preferred Qualifications-Experience with PeopleSoft
-Experience with the State of California and/or the CSU Payroll System (PIMS)
-2 years' customer service experience, including handling sensitive and confidential matters
-Experience in the processing of payroll in higher education
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities-Thorough knowledge of or the ability to acquire quickly: Uniform State Payroll Procedures Manual, Personnel Information Management System Manual and other information found in state and university administrative manual and guidelines.
-Knowledge of software applications: Excel spreadsheet, Microsoft Word, PeopleSoft Absence Management and Time and Labor modules.
-Strong oral and written communication skills.
-Effective listening skills.
-Excellent customer service and public relations skills
-Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, and SJSU policies and procedures.
-Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.

-Ability to independently identify appropriate payroll applications, and tactfully and clearly explain a wide variety of complex payroll procedures responding to employee questions and related problems.
-Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects within strict deadlines.
