Departmental Overview
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is charged with providing an equitable opportunity for every applicant to obtain admission to the University. This position was an outcome of the Chancellor's Task Force on Academics and Athletics report recommendations (dated September 26, 2014) and is dedicated as an athletics/admissions liaison. The position plays a key role in developing and coordinating a comprehensive recruitment and admission program for student athletes. Incumbent develops and executes a recruitment strategy that supports the mission and objectives of the University and assesses the effectiveness of the program and serves as an expert in the office for athletic admissions issues. This position serves as the (undergraduate) Athletics Admissions Specialist. Involves developing and implementing programs for athletic student admissions for the Berkeley campus and/or school/college/department within appropriate constituents and communities; and educating the public about admissions requirements, the athletic admission policy, and processes.
  • Advise prospective student athlete applicants (international, US citizens or permanent residents), faculty and staff regarding admission and transfer credit. Advising may be in person, by mail, by e-mail or by telephone. This requires: 1) a sound working knowledge of education systems around the world at the secondary and post-secondary levels, 2) a solid understanding of NCAA requirements, policies, and processes, and 3) the ability to assess a student's educational background, making transfer credit judgments when necessary and then providing the student or their supporting staff with appropriate advising.
  • Assist management in the design and then oversees implementation of the student athlete application review and selection process. Independently plans, initiates and executes the selection process for student athletes.
  • Modifies procedures, in accordance with campus and system-wide policies, as relevant to an applicant's educational structure to ensure that the spirit of campus policies are met.
  • Analyze academic records from secondary and tertiary institutions to determine eligibility and level of competitiveness in the admission pool.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the student athlete recruitment, application review, and selection program, considering athletics and admissions goals. Proposes program modifications as necessary; maintain documentation, including historical summaries. Initiate and develop reports as necessary.
  • Provide liaison with other offices, colleges and schools on campus concerning student athlete issues; especially Intercollegiate Athletics, the Berkeley International Office, and admissions officers at other UC campuses.
  • Provide training on the athletic admission policy and related practices to other internal admission officers as necessary for completion of workload.
  • Evaluate student athlete records for eligibility (pre-application) and for the selection process (post-application).
  • Reviews most difficult and complex admissions cases, provides assistance to experienced admissions specialists. Serve as resource to all freshman and transfer readers on review of student athlete records, providing assessment of academic preparation and non-cognitive factors that can help determine both academic and athletic success on campus.
  • Represent college/school/department or campus as it relates to specialist's specific area of expertise and provides guidance to other specialists in that area of expertise, such as athletic admission policies, NCAA compliance issues or articulation agreements.

    Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of student athlete admissions and circumstances which may affect student athletes, including trends in NCAA policies and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of project management including program design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of Higher Education, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to prospective students and the public.
  • Advanced and comprehensive knowledge of academic programs, including curricula, admissions requirements, and financial aid programs, at colleges/universities and specifically at UC Berkeley.
  • Advanced knowledge of tertiary level academic credentials, secondary school records, study abroad programs and policies, and the knowledge of major educational systems of the world.
  • Advanced ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with schools, universities, community organizations, and other institutions.
  • Advanced ability to develop recruitment programs, and design effective materials.
  • Advanced knowledge of admissions requirements for campus/school/college, including mitigating circumstances/bases for exceptions.
  • Advanced skills to develop the school's/college's strategic recruitment plans, designing outreach and recruitment programs and materials that will attract and enroll top candidates to the school/college, including students from under-represented groups.
  • Knowledgeable about Office of the President, Board of Admission and Relations with Schools, and the Berkeley campus' Admissions Enrollment & Preparatory Education Committee; the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Pacific-12 Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards, especially as pertaining to athletic recruits.
  • Ability to determine eligibility for freshman and transfer admission and the level of applicant's competitiveness relative to the system of instruction and overall pool to the Berkeley campus.
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of project management including program design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Knowledgeable about Office of the President, Board of Admission and Relations with Schools, and the Berkeley campus' Admissions Enrollment & Preparatory Education Committee; the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Prior experience working with coaches, and college athletics.

    Salary & Benefits
    Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is $70,000 - $90,000
