Departmental Overview
The Division of Data Science and Information is a newly formed Division at the organizational level of our Colleges and Schools. The Division's dynamic structure connects computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences to create a vibrant and collaborative environment to accelerate breakthrough research across scientific and technological frontiers. The Division includes Data Science Education, the School of Information, the departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, and the Data Science Commons. The Division offers programs of interdisciplinary research and teaching at significant scale, and it is continually developing new pathways and programs to advance its mission on campus and beyond. It is fundamentally committed to core Berkeley values of equity and inclusion in the service of society.

The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year. It includes a BA degree in Letters & Science and a new minor. It is responsible for supporting the campus-wide data science education program, including a foundational introductory course, Data 8, which serves over 3,000 students annually and is rapidly growing, together with dozens of connector courses, advanced courses serving thousands of students, and a portfolio of co-curricular programs.

This position involves analytical studies on a variety of policies, projects, programs and issues in support of a function, program and/or organizational unit, or in research of new or changing systems and programs. Assists in policy and program planning, development and administration; interprets, monitors and analyzes information regarding policies and procedures and provides consultative services regarding general management to department administrators.

Responsibilities
25% Recruitment and Matching:
Develops, operates, and adapts application system for student programs and teams. Prepares application forms, leads in developing assessment criteria, organizes and collaborates in application review. Collaborates in developing matching criteria, oversees matching process. Prepares onboarding paperwork, ensures all participants are onboarded. Maintains databases.

25% Student Engagement:
Mentors staff and student leads in steering their teams in a consistent manner ensuring that they meet predetermined goals, Creates cross trained teams to review the 1,000+ application and hire process. Develops and implements programs for ensuring positive, growth-oriented student team culture. Oversees pathways for students to develop responsibility, leadership, and skills.

15% Analysis and Evaluation:
Identifies and develops evaluation tools for student research and project management. Analyzes, evaluates, and adjusts programs and systems through student and participant evaluations. Monitors and analyzes participant trends of interest. Tracks student and project performance and program desirability.

10% Planning and Development:
Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for the Data Science Discovery Program that connects over 150 undergraduate students with hands on, team based opportunities to contribute to cutting edge data research projects with graduate and post doctorate students, community groups, entrepreneurial ventures, and UCB educational initiatives. Generates options for planning, recruiting, and managing growth of other large-scale student programs in the Division, including student teams, Data Scholars, and student training opportunities. Plans and develops new programs and curriculum, and adjusts existing courses and curriculum in a continuing education environment. Participates in developing strategic market plans and target audiences for the DS programs.

10% Course Delivery:
Orients, evaluates, and supervises qualified course and program team leaders. Acts as point of contact for project leaders and students on research projects. Provides training and mentoring to team members. Develops schedule for student check-in times and locations with students and partners.

10% Presentations and Events:
May provide presentation or instruction of program. Facilitates and supports own and Discovery and other program events. Creates information and social events to generate student interest and improve retention.

5% Budget:
Develops, prepares, and reconciles budget for Discovery and related student programs.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff; both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong skills in analyzing and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals.
  • Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, Google Forms, databases
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes in a fast-moving environment..
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Strong judgment in assessing trade-offs in campus context.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs. Analytical/problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

    *The salary range designated for this position: $60,800 - $75,000; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
