The Locksmith will install, maintain, repair and replace physical and electronic hardware in order to help students, faculty and visitors maintain an acceptable level of security to protect life and property while still respecting the need for individual freedom of movement within the University Facilities.

Accountabilities:
  1. Conducts lock, core and key related functions in residence halls, sororities and fraternities.
    • Implements and manages procedures for locks and keys.
    • Issues keys and maintains record of issue.
    • Provides temporary replacement keys for Students as required.
    • Provides replacement lock cores and new keys for Students as required.
    • Creates and maintains a supply of replacement lock cores and keys.
    • Maintains, replaces, and repairs lock cores.
    • Cuts all keys necessary & ability to cut keys by code.
    • Removes existing lock cores and installs replacement cores twice per year for all residence halls.
    • Removes existing lock cores and installs replacement cores twice per year for all sororities.
    • Manage and distribute keys for students, faculty, staff, contractors and vendors.
    • Ability to modify hardware for locks.
    • Ability to create and maintain master key systems.
  2. Provides response to calls for lock and key related service in academic, administrative, athletic or commercial areas of campus.
    • Maintains, installs, repairs and replaces all types of locksets, exit devices and panic bars for all buildings on campus.
    • Cut all keys as necessary for University issue.
    • Repair and adjust hinges and door closers for proper door operation; refer major door or hinge operations to maintenance for repair.
    • Open doors with malfunctioning locks or where keys are no longer on file.
    • Repairs and maintains machinery and equipment.
    • Performs preventive maintenance.
    • Dismantles malfunctioning systems and tests components.
    • Replaces or adjusts defective or worn parts to repair systems.
    • Responds to after hours, holiday or emergency callouts as required.
    • Locks/unlocks buildings, as required.
    • Coordinates with maintenance or contractors as required.
    • Prepares stock releases on all stock removed from inventory for charging to work order.
    • Coordinates an annual inventory count of all stock on hand.
    • Maintains and implements Master key and keying systems on campus, including re-combinating lock cylinders to new keys under existing Master key systems.
    • Maintain key system records.
    • Prepares time and cost estimates for completing projects and work requests.
    • Assists faculty, staff, vendors, contractors, visitors and students at customer counter, as required.
    • Keeps educationally informed and current through books, magazines, classes, seminars and exhibitions/conventions.
    • Provides fill-in support for department personnel when needed.
  3. Maintains and operates the electronic card access software and hardware.
    • Operates computer and peripheral equipment to process data.
    • Secures buildings during non-occupancy periods such as semester breaks or holidays.
    • Programs stand-alone card database.
    • Electronically locks/unlocks buildings, as required.
    • Refers major hardware problems to outside contractors.
    • Responds to after hours, holiday or emergency callouts as required.
    • Replaces or adjusts defective or worn parts to repair systems.
    • Ability to install, repair, and maintain Access Control hardware.
    • Ability to clean, maintain, adjust, calibrate, and service equipment.
    • Install, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical hardware including locking hardware, card readers, door contacts, REX motions, micro switches in exit devices, electric hinges, etc.
    • Drilling, grinding, and cutting required for necessary install and repair work.
  4. Provides customer service for card & key users.
    • Answers phone calls to assist users encountering problems.
    • Communicates with users to develop systems solutions.
    • Responds to the needs and questions of card access users.
    • Researches, resolves and follows up on routine user problems.
    • Refers more complex problems to appropriate individual.
    • Analyzes and makes recommendations on improving existing systems.
    • Provides response to calls for lock and key related service in residential and commercial areas of campus.
    • Makes sure keys are available for daily sign out by contractors and vendors and student.
    • Assists faculty, staff, vendors, contractors, visitors and students when needed.
  5. Provides administrative support.
    • Complete and submit paperwork accurately and on time.
    • Ability to write simple correspondence.
    • Ability to read operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
    • Always maintains detailed records of issued keys, lock information etc.
Qualifications:
  1. Associates Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Locksmith, Access Control, or Database Management
  2. Locksmith Certification preferred
  3. Five to eight years related work experience
  4. Basic Low voltage wiring knowledge preferred
  5. Ability to install, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical door hardware
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  7. Great work ethic, team player, willing to learn, willing to teach
  8. Valid Driver’s License required and good driving record
  9. Solid computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database software
  10. Knowledge of Software House C-cure 9000 a plus
  11. Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
Special Considerations:
  • Will nearly continuously use hands and arms to reach, feel and handle objects.
  • Will nearly continuously need to speak and hear
  • Will often be required to walk, stand, sit, lift up to 25 pounds, work near mechanical parts or in areas with vibration
  • Will sometimes need to climb or balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl, lift up to 100 pounds, work in we or humid non-weather conditions, or areas with risk of radiation
  • Required use of basic hand tools and power tools and key cutting equipment
  • This position is responsible for driving university-owned vehicles as a routine function, therefore a valid Driver’s License and a good driving record is required
  • This position works with minors
  • Will work a variable shift
  • Periods of high volume/workload may be required for openings, closings and emergencies
  • Required to be on call
  • Occasional evening, holiday or weekend hours
  • Occasional travel to attend training
