The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is seeking to hire an experienced grant proposal development specialist with advanced scientific and technical writing skills, project management expertise, and experience with reporting requirements for federally funded projects to lead large, collaborative research project initiatives.

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Research Administration and Development or designee, the Collaborative Proposal Development Specialist, in partnership with faculty principal investigators, will spearhead the development of large, interdisciplinary research/center grant proposals, providing advanced managing editor and technical writer support for proposal materials. This position will also provide administrative oversight and ongoing technical writing support for funded projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee and champion the development of proposals for strategically important large grant mechanisms (with awards in excess of $1M per year).
  • Serve as managing editor/lead of a proposal development team, in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI).This includes identifying and interpreting grant solicitations, developing proposal writing plans and timelines, coordinating and overseeing team responsibilities, and ensuring that all proposal development tasks are completed in accordance with internal and external deadlines.
  • Facilitate communication/collaboration among diverse team members (including interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaborations) and provide document management support, assisting with updates across the application as the science and research aims change, and ensuring that team members have access to up-to-date materials.
  • Provide administrative oversight for awarded projects to ensure that complex reports or compliance steps are completed in a timely manner.
  • Provide advanced-level technical writing support for scientific and non-scientific portions of proposals and reports.
  • Deliver comprehensive editorial review of research/center grant proposals, providing significant input into the content, organization, wording, and tone of the full document.May provide assistance with formatting and editing of figures and other graphical elements.
  • Coordinating with individuals at various levels and offices throughout the University to shepherd projects through the development, submission, and award stages.Ensure successful integration of all grant components and compliance with all funding solicitation and sponsor requirements.This includes collaborating with other proposal development staff, department/college fiscal and administrative staff, and staff in Sponsored Programs Services.
  • Proofread/edit written copy prior to submission, ensuring readability, typographical / grammatical correctness, appropriate formatting, and completeness.
  • May assist the OVPR with other research development activities in support of the University’s research mission and goals.
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, or other relevant writing-focused or scientific field.
  2. At least five years of progressively responsible experience writing and editing scientific, technical, or research proposals or articles.
  3. Evidence of masterful writing ability, as demonstrated by writing samples.
  4. Experience writing proposals for federal sponsors.
  5. Ability to approach the writing of others with respect while working with them to shape and strengthen it.
  6. Advanced ability to organize, analyze, and interpret complex scientific, medical, or technical data. Ability to translate difficult technical information into language suitable for target audience(s).
  7. Strong organizational skills, with demonstrated success managing complex projects and leading teams.
  8. Excellent ability to meet and enforce deadlines, with ability to prioritize responsibilities, attend to details, take initiative, and work independently to carry out difficult assignments.
  9. Superior communication, interpersonal and diplomatic skills
  10. Ability to thrive in in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment as well as work collaboratively and adapt to changing processes and procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a STEM discipline.
  2. Demonstrated success in preparing/shepherding large (in excess of $1M per year) research/center grant proposals to award or leading complex/interdisciplinary strategic initiatives.
  3. Experience working on a federally funded project in a research administration role.
  4. Advanced knowledge of guidelines and requirements of federal sponsors like the NSF, DOD, DOE, and others, including Uniform Guidance (OMB Circulars A-81).
  5. Ability to develop budgets for sponsored projects.

APPOINTMENT TERMS
