Hofstra University is a dynamic community of more than 11,000 students from around the world who are dedicated to civic engagement, academic excellence and becoming leaders in their communities and their careers.Description:Reporting to the Director of Grounds, the Assistant Director is responsible for the daily management and performance of the Grounds department at Hofstra University. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

•Schedules and supervises Grounds maintenance and project work, events and Athletic Department outdoor activities.
•Monitors and tracks work order hours
•Delegates and hold subordinates responsible for satisfactory performance of assignments.
•Monitors and ensures employee productivity, compliance, status and quality of work assignments.
•Ensures compliance with safety regulations and procedures.
•Maintain the inventory and proper care of all tools, equipment, materials and supplies.
•Inspects and monitor irrigation systems.
•Uses computer-based management software systems for planning, scheduling, timekeeping, and event support.
•Ensures the daily removal of all trash and litter from landscape, gardens, grounds, parking lots, hardscape and athletic fields.
•Provides maintenance and support services to Hofstra Athletics, Summer Camps and University Events and Conferences.
•Oversees performance of snow control operations and storm cleanup.
•Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications:Bachelor's degree required. Bachelor's degree in horticulture, arboriculture, or related area preferred. Master’s in related field is a plus. Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience managing a union workforce in an Arboretum/Botanical/ Arboriculture setting. Higher Education experience is a plus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook required; experience utilizing Scheduling & Work Order programs is a plus. Must possess a thorough knowledge of Grounds installation, operations and maintenance best practices. Experience operating and maintaining industry-standard commercial grounds vehicles, equipment and systems.

Ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks in all weather conditions required. Must possess and maintain a valid N.Y. State Driver’s License. Arborist and/or NYS Pesticide license is a plus. Ability to read and interpret landscape, construction & irrigation drawings required. Strong communication, management, organizational and interpersonal skills required.

Must be available 24/7 for campus weather emergencies. Occasional evenings and weekends required for University events and department functions.
