Position Summary

This position serves as a pre-award grants application administrator in the Office of Research Support (ORS) in the College of Natural Science. The position reports to the Director of ORS, who reports to the NatSci Budget Officer and the Associate Dean for Research. The individual assists in all aspects of preparing internal and external research grant applications. This individual will be responsible for guiding faculty in developing time schedules for submittal, and identifying and preparing necessary administrative and institutional documents required for grant submittal. They will coordinate their activities in the Dean’s office with the MSU Office of Sponsored Programs, and Contracts and Grants Administration to carry out contract negotiations with sponsored programs, other universities, federal and state governments, foundations, and industries. The individual will be responsible for auditing grant proposals before submittal to ensure compliance with sponsoring agency regulations, guidelines and programmatic requirements, as well as College and University policies and procedures. The position requires someone who can multitask to develop and coordinate multiple projects with extensive interactions with multiple internal colleges/units and external entities. Occasional after normal business hours as well as weekend administrative, educational, and training events may be required.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business Administration, Finance, or a research-related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a research, business, or educational setting, including use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software; experience in budget development, account management, data gathering, and reporting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; possession of a valid vehicle operator's license; completion of Essentials of Research Administration at MSU Certificate Series or equivalent within one year of hire.

Desired Qualifications

Completion of NCURA SPA I & II training; experience in developing proposals for research projects, preferably in an academic environment; extensive experience with Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience in database management and data/financial analysis; background in science or business course work; a self-starter whose strengths include creative thinking and problem solving, teamwork, and ability to work on several projects simultaneously in a fast paced and stressful deadline-oriented environment; experience in the administration of grants and contracts; experience in interpreting federal agency policies, including those of NIH, NSF, DOE, USDA, and DOD; knowledge of FastLane and Grants.gov application processing; knowledge of University policies and procedures.

Must possess exemplary customer service skills including: communication, customer focus, building relationships, building trust, impact, adaptability, ability to handle stress, critical thinking, problem solving, and focused on process improvement.
