Position Title:GOHS Peer Health Educator - Institutional Student Worker (Fall 2019) Campus Location:Dahlonega Job Close Date:09/30/2019 General Summary:

The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a GOHS Peer Health Educator. This position is a grant funded position that will work closely with the Campus Health Educator and the team of volunteer Peer Health Educators (PHEs) to plan, promote, and implement educational events and activities on various health issues. This is a paid student leadership position. Successful candidates will serve as a primary team lead for the volunteer PHE membership. They are expected to serve as leaders and role models in their efforts. Their work will support the UNG PHE mission: to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed, voluntary choices regarding all aspects of wellness. The GOHS PHE will have several training opportunities on various health related topics to better plan and promote health education topics. Training may include alcohol education, driving while impaired, distracted driving (texting/phone use while driving) and seat belt usage.

This is a temporary position ending September, 30th 2019 and may be renewed for the remaining academic year.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

The student will:

    Work collaboratively with the campus Health Educator to create a strategic plan for peer-led health educationRemain available and in contact with all PHEs to maintain communication and forward progress towards established goalsBuild relationships with the volunteers to encourage their leadership development and group cohesivenessOversee the work of the volunteer PHEsMaintain organized calendar of upcoming presentations and eventsRecord notes for all PHE meetingsMake sure that all events and presentations are properly plannedDelegate tasks to work-groups and maintaining contact with work-group leaders to ensure follow-through and completionProvide justification statements for GOHS PHE budget useEnsure PHE resource rooms are organized and well-maintainedSeek out opportunities to work collaboratively with student organizations and other departments to create, publicize, and deliver health promotion programs and eventsServe as a health information and referral resource; support the volunteers to serve in the same capacityPerform other duties as assigned and as determined as the position evolves
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    The ideal candidate should be interested in leading a group of peer volunteers in proactively addressing health issues relevant to the GOHS Young Adult Highway Safety Program grant, among college students Must possess a strong interest in preventative health and a desire to affect change in student health behaviors through creative and effective health promotion activitiesMust be a role model for responsible and healthy lifestyle choices and enthusiastic about educating their peers on wellness issuesMust possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and to be able to communicate effectively with their peers, University employees and possibly, community agenciesMust be able to work as a team member and independently (“self-starter”)Must be able to organize and manage a variety of projects simultaneouslyMust possess positive work attitude and be dependable and responsibleMust be able to work in a team setting and independentlyGood organization and time management skills, punctuality, strong written and excellent oral and written communication skills
Certifications/Licenses & Minimum Requirements:
  • Must be enrolled at the University of North Georgia in a minimum of six (6) credit hours to qualify as a student worker
  • Previous student leadership experience preferred
  • Must be a full-time student in good academic standing (2.5 GPA)
