Division of Intercollegiate Athletics

Position: Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics, Development (located in Chicago)

Twelve-month, 100% Athletic Services Basis Academic Professional Appointment

Primary Position Function: Lead all engagement and fundraising initiatives and programs for the Chicago satellite office of the University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Development, the primary responsibilities include the oversight and leadership of the athletics development team located in the Chicago satellite office of the University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. This position’s office will be located at the Illini Center in downtown Chicago.

Leadership and Management

  • Manage day-today operations of the Chicago Office of Athletics Development.
  • Work in coordination with the Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Development to plan and implement annual fund, major gift, and premium seating sales programs specific to Chicagoland.
  • Work in coordination with the Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Development regarding the implementation and execution of capital campaigns and principal gift initiatives specific to Chicagoland.
  • Work in coordination with the Director of Varsity “I” to support Varsity “I” strategic annual plan initiatives specific to Chicagoland.
  • Manage the Chicago Athletics Advisory Board (CAAB), coordinate annual meeting schedule, recruit and retain members, as terms expire. Cultivate and steward members of the CAAB throughout the year.

Frontline Fundraising activities / initiatives

  • Serve as the lead fundraiser focused on Chicagoland. Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward I FUND leadership annual gift prospects and donors, as well as major gift and principal gift prospects and donors.
  • Maintain a portfolio of 100 – 125 / 125 - 150 major gift and leadership annual gift plans.
  • Complete 20-25 face-to-face visits per month, annually.
  • Plan and execute 25-30 major gift ($25,000 or greater) solicitations annually.
  • Plan and execute major gift and leadership annual gift solicitation of $2,500,000 or greater / $2,000,000 or greater.
  • Secure $1,500,000 or greater / $1,000,000 in gift commitments annually.

Travel / Events

  • Plan and host donor engagement, annual fund acquisition, and major gift fundraising and stewardship events specific to Chicagoland.
  • Serve as a host for donor activities at football and basketball games in Chicago and Champaign.
  • Attend on-campus games and events with some overnight stay.
  • Some overnight and out-of-state travel may be required, with the ability to work long hours and weekends.

Business / Engagement

  • Collaborate with the Chicago Illini Clubs for fundraising initiatives that will assist with opportunities to further the mission for the Office of Athletics Development.
  • Create revenue generation for the Office of Athletics Development through corporate channels.

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in sports administration, finance, business management, communications, or related fields.

Education Preferred (For Associate): Master’s degree in Business, Sport Management, Athletics Administration, Tourism/Hospitality, Communications or a closely related field.

Experience Required:Minimum of five years’ experience with knowledge of the development process, corporate relations, and a strong understanding of issues facing intercollegiate athletics and athletics fundraising. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Computer proficiency with the ability to work with large, complex databases such as Spectra, Ballena, Blackbaud and Microsoft Office. Basic understanding of leadership annual giving, major donor prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Ability to represent the Office of Athletics Development and maintain credibility by conducting oneself appropriately and professionally. Knowledge of and compliance with, specific NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and institution rules that relate to this position is required.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications.

Research

Students and scholars find the University an ideal place to conduct research. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is a model for interdisciplinary research, where eighteen research groups from sixteen University departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures. The University is also home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

Undergraduate Education

The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

The University enrolls over 9,000 graduate and professional students in more than 100 disciplines. It is among the top five universities in number of earned doctorates awarded annually in the United States.

Also integral to the University's mission is a commitment to public engagement. Each year about 65,000 Illinois residents participate in scores of conferences, institutes, courses, and workshops presented statewide. Research and class projects take students and professors off campus to share expertise and technical support with Illinois farmers, manufacturing firms, and businesses. In a typical year, student volunteers log more than 60,000 volunteer hours.

The Arts

A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture. 

Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
