Under the general direction of the Associate Dean of Student Involvement, the Associate Director for Student Involvement Programs is responsible for functional supervision and administration of the student activities program and leadership program areas and personnel within the department. This position aids in advancing the strategic vision for student development programs designed to facilitate student leadership development and skill building, foster a sense of campus community and belonging; and mitigate risk for students and the institution related to participation in student organizations and student life outside the classroom. The Associate Director plays a vital role in supporting the development, implementation and assessment of a comprehensive, cohesive, and integrated array of student learning and involvement experiences.

Position Summary

The major duties of the job include:

  • Provide input and support to the Associate Dean of Student Involvement in the development of strategic vision, conceptual framework, and implementation of all student activities/student development program areas including: Center for Leadership programs, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Off-Campus Student Life, student clubs and organizations, eSports, student union programs, club sports teams, marketing, and major campus events.
  • Participate in the analysis of student data and campus landscape and identify gaps/opportunities to improve programs, services and resources for students or particular student sub-populations.
  • Consult with functional area experts, peer institution leaders, CSU colleagues and knowledge communities to identify potential solutions and best practices to address areas of specific concern.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean and staff in establishing program development directions and initiatives targeted to achieve specified improvements, and change/growth undertakings.
  • Participate in the establishment of cohesive and integrated learning outcomes for all student activities areas, and ensure program assessments are conducted against established outcomes.
  • Supervise student involvement professional staff program coordinators; planning, monitoring and controlling the work of the team.
  • Provide support and guidance to professional staff members in developing the knowledge and skills needed to effectively deliver programs and services.
  • Implement professional staff training modules to ensure cross-training, increase efficiency and improve processes.
  • Uphold expectations and organizational roles/responsibilities to assure that work is done effectively, efficiently and equitably, as designated by the Associate Dean.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and evaluation to professional staff members under their supervision.
  • Administer the overall recruitment, hiring/selection, training, supervision and evaluation of student volunteer boards/volunteer committees as well as student employees and graduate assistants.
  • Ensure the implementation of a cohesive, comprehensive training model for staff, student teams, and student employees.
  • Collaborate with staff to further the program evaluation and assessment activities for the department, identifying annual focus areas, research questions, national benchmarking opportunities, as well as supporting the development of in-house approaches to assess and evaluate student learning outcomes and program effectiveness. Present and share data/assessment findings with department and divisional colleagues and peers as appropriate.
  • Advance identified funding needs to support student activities through the development of fund request proposals and solicitation of financial (from student fees, general fund, ASI, IRA and other internal and external resources).
  • Aid in the creation of program area budgets, monitor spending, report on budget progress against goals. Advise on compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Negotiate, reviews, and process all contracts, agreements and funding requests exercising sound fiscal stewardship.
  • Convey to staff, students and others on-campus stakeholders of relevant federal, state, local and institutional laws, policies, Chancellor’s Office codes, regulations and requirements, particularly those related to student organizations, recognition and activity of student organizations, freedom of expression, time, place, and manner, Title IX, alcohol and other drugs, social hosting guidelines, hazing, and student privacy rights.
  • Reinforce compliance expectations and processes from student organizations, student leaders and Student Involvement department staff. Administers compliance procedures fairly and accurately.
  • Provide support to Associate Dean in recommending changes to existing policies and procedures as needed to support or address student success and safety, in collaboration with General Counsel, Risk Management, Public Safety, Health Services and senior student affairs leadership.
  • Facilitate development and implementation of broad array of training and educational resources to students, faculty and staff about applicable laws, policies, procedures, codes, regulations, best practices.
  • Act as a liaison to Risk Management, Public Safety, Parking, Plant Operations, Dining Services and other campus entities relative to student organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and on campus programs and major events.
  • Communicate effectively to a wide variety of audiences including senior administrators, faculty, staff, families, students, and community members.
  • Provide exceptional level of service in responding to inquiries, providing information to external and internal clients, recommending and implementing solutions to identified problems.
  • Report and communicate progress and issues on a regular basis.
  • Communicate to Associate Dean updates and changes related to Commencement, student organization policies and procedures, and other student activity concerns.
  • Administer marketing activity for the department, including brand identity, marketing request process, graphic design, print/production, electronic media posts, website maintenance and copy, and distribution of information across multiple channels and to multiple audiences.
  • Provide advising to individual students, student organizations and professional staff members, effectively managing sensitive/confidential information and issues with diplomacy and respect.

The secondary duties of the job include:

  • Coordinate administrative functions/needs of the programming unit including evaluating and addressing technology and other infrastructure needs, office space usage, staff travel requests and professional association memberships.
  • Identify workflow process issues and improve efficiency.
  • Represent the Associate Dean and/or Student Involvement Office on various institutional committees and working groups.
  • Collaborate with Student Union facilities/operations staff and others to support the broad goals of the office, the Division and the institution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QualificationsRequired Education and Experience:

  • A Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel, Educational Leadership, Higher Education Administration or very closely related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in areas directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
  • Experience supervising multiple and complex cross-functional student programs in a higher education setting
  • Experience leading, guiding, directing inspiring and motivating individuals and groups to high levels of quality, productivity and satisfaction; experience recruiting, hiring/selecting, training, guiding and evaluating student volunteer and employee groups
  • Experience developing and monitoring complex budgets from multiple funding sources
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and models, as well as understanding of student shared governance within public higher education
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state and institutional laws, regulations, policies and procedures
  • A record of successful leadership, collaboration, management, and administration, including knowledge of business practices and procedures, risk management, budgeting and fiscal management, and staff recruitment, development, and performance evaluation

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Prior higher education experience working within a student union operation is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership coordinating university-wide programs and events
  • Experience creating and delivering integrated and/or multifaceted marketing strategies, writing content for web and print marketing collateral, and guiding the work of graphic designers and printers
  • Prior experience in programming, off-campus student life, and assessment
  • Prior higher education experience working with fraternities, sororities, campus leaders, advisors, councils, chapters and communities
