Description

The Department of Education in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE&IS) at the University of California, Los Angeles announces an opening for a tenure-track advanced assistant/associate professor position in Qualitative Research Methods. Candidates will be considered at the advanced assistant and associate professor level.

The successful candidate must have an established program of research that utilizes qualitative methodology to address problems of education theory, policy, and practice in settings in and/or out of education institutions, and that is deeply reflective about the methods themselves. We seek an individual who will serve as a core faculty member and add significantly to GSE&IS's qualitative methods program, and who will contribute scholarship to one or more of the Education Department's divisions and professional programs. Although the specific area of substantive research expertise is open, GSE&IS's core mission addresses issues of education equity, diversity, and social justice, and we seek candidates whose substantive work advances this mission. Individuals with a history of and commitment to mentoring students from underrepresented minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a robust grounding in qualitative research in education institutions (e.g., K-12 schools, community and/or Tribal colleges, universities) as well as out-of-school settings (e.g., museums, adult learning, libraries, Tribal- and community-based organizations), and who are engaged in innovative uses of qualitative methods and methodology that will complement and strengthen our existing scholarship in this area. The successful candidate is expected to have a solid skill set across an array of qualitative methods. Innovative approaches to qualitative inquiry and experience mentoring graduate students in qualitative research are highly valued. A strong record of externally funded research is a plus.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching introductory and advanced courses in qualitative methods and courses in a substantive area of expertise.
  • Collaborating with other GSE&IS faculty and UCLA faculty in related social science disciplines to strengthen the qualitative research program.
  • Maintaining a strong qualitative research agenda as evidenced by refereed publications and external and internal grant support.
  • Mentoring graduate students, individually and in research seminars, in qualitative methods.
  • Teaching in one of the GSE&IS professional programs (e.g., Educational Leadership, Teacher Education) or the undergraduate major at UCLA.

    Qualifications: An earned doctorate in Education or a related field is required. Additional qualifications include a record of research and scholarly publications consistent with the position and appointment level, and ability to teach and advise students at the graduate level. The successful candidate must have a strong qualitative research, teaching, and grant record, a willingness to collaborate on program development, and demonstrated commitment to diversity- and equity-related teaching, research, and service. Prior experience teaching qualitative methods courses is expected, and teaching/mentoring experience at the graduate level is highly desired.

    Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    Starting Date: July 1, 2020, with teaching duties beginning September, 2020.
