UNC Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) helps people understand—and reach decisions in— a complex and changing world.

NEMAC conducts applied environmental research to create tools that address the challenges and opportunities of human interaction with the environment. By integrating data, creating visualizations, facilitating understanding, and providing decision support, we work to address issues that impact our society. Our goal is to help people understand the relevance and importance of complex environmental issues. With the assistance of UNC Asheville undergraduate research interns, NEMAC develops web applications, interactive geographic information systems (GIS) solutions, multimedia delivery technologies, and print media. Over the last several years, NEMAC has built multiple nationally recognized online decision support tools that have supported decision making in the areas of climate variability and change, forest health, and other environmental issues.

NEMAC is currently seeking a Software Developer to join our staff in a full-time position to support NEMAC’s applied research efforts.

The successful applicant will conduct applied research and assist in the development, and maintenance of geospatial web applications and decision support tools and must have proven experience with full-stack development, geospatial technologies, and cloud-native software solutions. He or she must have experience with outreach and working with external partners to help end users better understand complex systems data and information through innovative and interactive tools and technologies. The person filling this position must be technically savvy but also have excellent applied research, communication and project management skills to support NEMAC’s overall program.

  • Coursework in advanced mathematics and/or statistics
  • Experience developing geospatial web applications
  • Experience maintaining client relationships
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate interns
  • Experience developing microservices on the AWS platform
  • Experience deploying applications with Kubernetes
  • Experience maintaining computing resources with AWS, OpenStack, or similar cloud technologies
  • Experience with the maintenance of spatial data using GDAL, QGIS, and Esri software
  • Experience with the geospatial web server Mapserver
  • Familiarity with DevOps principles
  • Experience deploying cloud resources with Terraform
  • Experience with content management systems such as Drupal or WordPress
  • Experience troubleshooting Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems
  • Experience with business support tools like the Value Proposition Canvas and Business Model Canvas
  • Experience maintaining Linux web servers
  • Experience building decision support tools for applied forest science
  • Experience developing websites with Drupal 7 and/or 8
  • Familiarity with statistical analyses and data management practices used in computational forest science
  • Familiarity with the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit and the Steps to Resilience
  • Familiarity with coastal resilience decision support tools
  • Manage users on several Drupal based portals
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of fundamental web technologies HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Knowledge of AWS cloud technologies
  • Knowledge of GIS technologies: GDAL, QGIS, and ArcMap
  • Knowledge of relational database management systems like PostgreSQL
  • Ability to adapt to new technical environments
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Ability to function in a highly self-directed manner
  • Knowledge of Drupal 7 and 8, including best practices for responsive design, front-end development, and backend maintenance
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
