Overview

Provide mechanical, electrical and operational technical support for the NSTX and other experiments, including PS&T projects. This position will support ongoing technical activities for the upgrade project of NSTX and activities in the Test Cell and shops in support of the project and other experiments, which includes the experimental devices along with all subsystems, including, but not limited to, vacuum equipment, vacuum preparation lab processing, vacuum components, pumping and monitoring systems, Helium leak test, component cooling, diagnostic devices. The Sr. Mechanical Machine Tech will assist in the design, fabrication, installation, and testing of mechanical systems, and will also construct, assemble, and maintain systems, or subsystems, as part of expansion of the machine infrastructure. The individual will assemble parts and assemblies for new diagnostics and other systems, and assist in integrating these systems to NSTX. Installs, troubleshoot, maintain and un-install various types of parts and equipment in experimental areas.  Provides guidance and supervision for the junior technicians.  The observance of laboratory safe work practices and the maintenance of a safe working environment will be required.

Responsibilities

Supervise small team of technicians performing work in experimental areas. Basic computer skills and the proficient use of measurement instruments. The ability to work competently and safely with various hand and power tools as required. Knowledge in the correct methods of assembly for electrical, plumbing and vacuum hardware. Ability to pass relevant technical and safety training courses. Ability to comprehend instructions and provide clear guidance and communicate effectively; document own and others' work. Mange time and ensure timely completion of tasks with safety and observance of the Lab standards and procedures.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent along with 10 or more years' experience in layout and fabrication and assembly of mechanical systems; assembly of electrical and electronic systems, as well as trouble shooting these systems.

 

Physical Requirements: 

This work involves climbing ladders, lifting items up to 501bs, working in awkward positions and requires full mechanical dexterity.
