About the College/Unit/Department

In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community.

Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia.

In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

This position is located in Tifton, GA, which is approximately 200 miles southwest of Athens, Georgia, 200 miles south of Atlanta, GA and approximately 70 miles north of the Florida line.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software
- Familiar with the use of statistical software (JMP, SAS or R) is preferred; or the desire to learn these programs
- Experience with precision ag technologies (e.g. GIS, remote sensing, etc.)

Position Summary

The new position will provide professional and managerial support for research and Extension programs of the UGA Peanut Team. Incumbent will participate in design, administration, and monitoring of peanut research trials. He/she will ensure compliance with protocol and overall objectives in cooperation with principal investigators. The Research Professional will collect, organize, and summarize a variety of data from multidisciplinary projects including those focusing on entomology, plant pathology, and agronomy. The employee will communicate effectively with scientists, county agents, and industry partners (e.g. peanut farmers, buying point and shelling plant operators, etc). The incumbent will assist with preparation of Extension educational materials and research publications. This position offers an excellent opportunity to enhance skills and continue education in agricultural research and Extension.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

•Knowledge of the biological sciences preferably in the field of Entomology, Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Pathology
•Proven ability in agricultural research and row crop production
•Competency conducting and performing experiments in the field, laboratory, and greenhouse
•Perform a variety of field sampling techniques, manage data sets, coordinate multiple tasks
•Basic understanding of row crop production
•Ability to accurately observe and record data
•Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills
•Ability to work outdoors in various environmental conditions including heat or cold temperatures, ability to multi-task and work independently with minimum supervision

Plans and organizes research projects including experimental design and implementation. Collection, organization, and summarization of experimental data. Work as liaison to coordinate between PIs, county agents, and industry partners. Work will be conducted in research station small plot trials, commercial fields, greenhouses, and the laboratory.
