Research Associate - Georgetown University Medical Center

Requirements

The Research Associate is an enthusiastic and committed scientist to help start a new laboratory at Georgetown University Medical Center, focusing on the epigenetics of oxidative stress and cell life and death decisions. Research in the laboratory focuses on how stress-related factors contribute to breast cancer progression and to the impact of novel cancer therapies on cardiac dysfunction. S/he plays a critical role in managing the laboratory as well as driving research progress. The position also involves day-to-day interaction with and supervision of trainees in the laboratory. Reporting directly to the PI, Dr. Nanette Bishopric, the Research Associate has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Manages the extraction, purification, and analysis of DNA and RNA from a variety of sources including human tissues.
  • Oversees immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry and histology, and confocal microscopy.
  • Handles genetically modified mouse breeding and genotyping, as well as the imaging of live mice.
  • Manages and uses mouse models of cancer.
  • Supervises trainee processes and compliance.
  • Orders supplies, manages lab accounts, and participates in lab meetings.
  • Communicates goals constructively with colleagues, assisting with publications such as formatting documents.
  • Manages the writing and figure production for manuscripts.
  • Designs new experimental methods.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Biological Sciences or related field
  • 2+ years' experience in molecular biology/genetics
  • Skills in standard molecular biology techniques, including protein electrophoresis, immunoblotting, extraction, purification and analysis of DNA and RNA from a variety of sources including human tissues, PCR and QPCR, DNA Sequencing, cloning and mutagenesis, primer design, and immunohistochemistry
  • Some experience with animal models of disease
  • Ability to monitor relevant scientific literature to incorporate new technologies in the laboratory and to adapt methods from published literature
  • Ability to assist the PI with the preparation of data for scientific publications and grant proposals, and to take on individual responsibility for certain projects
