Job Purpose
The Office of Civic Engagement & Social Responsibility is accepting applications for a Coordinator of Community Service. This position provides leadership in the planning and implementation of community service programs at Towson University. The Coordinator of Community Service coordinates events and activities such as Service Fairs, Project Serve and other greater Baltimore community wide initiatives along with determining the best approaches to other service-related initiatives that engage students across campus. The position will be the primary advisor for Alternative Break Connections. The Coordinator of Community Service will report to the Assistant Director for Community Engagement.

The Coordinator of Community Service will coordinate and promote civic engagement and other service opportunities on- and off-campus for students. Assist students in finding appropriate activities as individuals or as members of a student organization. Develop partnerships with other offices to engage participation in university-wide service events. Coordinate events and activities such as Service Fairs, BTU initiatives, Project Homelessness Connect, and other greater Baltimore community wide initiatives.

This position will work with Housing & Residence Life to enhance the residential learning community “Tigers Serving Others.” Develop year-round service opportunities for students who live on the residential learning community floor. Organize program and all operations for Project Serve; a pre-orientation service opportunity for new students. Serve as the primary advisor for Alternative Break Connections. Assist with the trip development for faculty/staff facilitator preparation, and work with Study Abroad office for international service trips.

Develop and maintain community service data, create incentive-based initiatives that encourage participation in community service and data collection. Update listserv and service website. Complete annual surveys such as the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll & Campus Compact Annual Survey. Supervise one Graduate Student and hire, train and supervise undergraduate Service Leaders. Assist with other duties within Division of Student Affairs as assigned.

Master’s degree and two years of experience. The selected candidate must have knowledge of higher education settings; experience with civic engagement and community service projects and initiatives; experience working with diverse student populations; committed to continuous learning, development, and research on current trends and best practices; and ability to work with a wide range of students, staff, and faculty in a diverse college setting. Strong written and verbal communication skills; understanding of and passion for social justice issues; knowledge of best practices for volunteer recruitment and management; understanding of best practices for university-community partnerships; grant writing and administration; demonstrated experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation; understanding of programs of the Corporation of National and Community Service; ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously with limited supervision; and MS Office 365 proficiency is required.


  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, or a closely related field.
  • Proficient in Spanish or other languages.

Salary and Benefits
