The University of Virginia's Center for  Diabetes Technology, (, is seeking a Research Data Engineer I/II, (commensurate with experience), to assist in the design, build, maintenance, and access of data; ensuring accurate processing and application. The Research Data Engineer will work closely with research professionals, operations, and finance; providing training and ensuring accuracy/cleanliness of data. We are seeking an individual looking for growth and challenge, who is professional and passionate about helping to build the next generation of technology-based health interventions. The successful incumbent will perform both operational and project-based work, be a team player, be flexible to multi-task on multiple, overlapping requirements, and have a strong desire to utilize their skill set to provide effective solutions in support of health care research.

The Research Data Engineer will work with research partners (faculty, researchers, and clinical research staff) to execute programming and data cleaning and processing assignments. The successful candidate will write code and scripts, ensure data specifications for research and system requirements, and provide for the integrity and confidentiality of the data. The incumbent will have experience conducting tests, performing code reviews, and working with end-users to ensure data outputs match specifications. Duties will include maintenance and/or modification of programs, scripts, and pipelines and writing operational instructions for such and training other staff members on their use. The Research Data Engineer will work with constituents to ensure research data are quickly and accurately transferred and processed from external programs and servers and ingested into CDT systems while reviewing, suggesting, and implementing changes or modifications to existing processes and systems.  

The successful candidate will have the following experience:

  • Writing and maintaining scalable cloud pipelines to keep streaming and non-streaming data flowing into database using tools such as: Python, Matlab, Jupyter etc. 
  • Developing front end dashboards, reports, and applications using large structured and unstructured data with: e.g. Angular, Bootstrap, others.
  • Performing data transformations to populate data into a table structure that is optimized for remote access on the cloud using Jupyter and similar tools.
  • Designs technical components for data extraction and analysis on a big data platform on the cloud, e.g. Hadoop, Hive, Pig, MapReduce.
  • Work with DBA and data analysts to gather requirements and develop pipelines accordingly on MySQL based backends.
  • Review data diagrams to align with needs of scientists using ERD tools like Vertabelo, QSEE Lite, or similar.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experienced in data integration across multiple geographic data locations 
  • Make strategies for real-time data analysis in tools such as Spark, Hadoop and others 
  • Scripts writing using programming languages (python, Shell scripting, and Java)
  • With interactive and batch processing using: e.g. Hive, Pig, Presto, etc.  
  • Use NoSQL tools such as MongoDB, DyanamoDB etc for utilizing to support clinical trial driven decision making.
  • Data Governance and Data Security using government (HIPAA, FDA) protocols.
  • Writing functional requirements, detailed technical specifications, and test cases for new or modified data projects.

Minimum Requirements:

Research Data Engineer I

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline

Experience: At least one year of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Licensure: None

Research Data Engineer II

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline

Experience: At least three years of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Licensure: None

Anticipated Hiring Range: $55,000 - $75,000 commensurate with education and experience.

This is a restricted position contingent on the continued availability of funding.

This position will remain open until filled and will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings, and programs
