Assistant Professor in Visual and Multimedia Storytelling
Join our community and experience Emerson College!

The Department of Journalism in the School of Communication at Emerson College seeks a scholar with professional experience in video, photography and multimedia storytelling, with an emphasis on work in and about diverse communities. This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor rank. This full-time faculty member would work with the undergraduate and graduate programs in Journalism and the graduate program in Media Design. The appointment begins August 20, 2020.Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the college's intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities.

The department is looking for an experienced academic and professional who can teach students to expand and extend visual storytelling especially in and about underrepresented communities. Photography, video, graphics and multimedia are driving new and more varied ways of journalistic storytelling. Video is becoming more complex in not only the traditional platform of broadcast news but also in new multimedia formats. The Department of Journalism is seeking a faculty member who will lead its efforts to extend visual journalism in all facets of its forward-thinking, learner-centered, multimedia curriculum and to help students understand its social and civic impact.

This individual will enhance existing course offerings such as the Digital Journalist, Beat Reporting Across Media, Advanced Audio-Video Journalism, Photojournalism, Advanced Multimedia Reporting, and Long-form Multimedia Storytelling, as well as develop new courses such as Photo and Video Documentary Journalism, and The Visual Language. Candidates should also be interested in working with co-curricular student journalism organizations and extending journalistic work in underrepresented communities.

Candidates must have a Master's degree (Ph.D. or terminal degree highly preferred) and an online portfolio of professional work that demonstrates expertise in a variety of visual media. The ideal candidate will have college-level teaching experience especially in working with diverse student communities, at least five years of professional experience in visual storytelling, especially photos and video, and a portfolio of work that explores traditional as well as experimental forms of visual storytelling. We expect candidates to have a vibrant professional practice and/or research agenda that they will continue to pursue in keeping with the department's tenure standards, ideally in ways that can potentially include students. Members of historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae/resume, evidence of teaching effectiveness and contact information for three references. Each material should be saved as a separate PDF and uploaded into the upload section where it requests your CV. Although the upload section just shows "upload CV" - you should upload all materials in this section as the separate documents.
