#100868 Program Manager – Pre-College & Career Preparation

This is a 100% contract position for one (1) year with the possibility of extension or conversion to career status depending on the needs of the department.

UC San Diego Extension is fully self-supporting, operating year-round (12 months of active instruction) with a budget of $47 million annually in primarily fee income. The unit has over 200 career employees, including academic, management, staff and executive, as well as represented and non-represented positions. Many casual or contract employees and student workers also serve in the organization. In addition, Extension employs about 1,000 active by-agreement instructors.

Extension operates in 200,000 square feet of managed space, including a large off-campus classroom facility. The unit maintains a robust online learning platform, operating 24/7 (including some Spanish language elements) with web-casting and video-conferencing capability. Extension also a strong web presence with e-commerce operating 24/7.

There are over 60,000 enrollment transactions annually; 35,000 outreach certification transactions and 25,000 service transactions. Extension supports a robust network of representatives, agents, and students (both residential and online) around the globe. Along with all of this, Extension operates two television stations, a variety of public lecture programs and is active in federal, state, local, and private research and technical assistance programs and activities.


The Program Manager assists in managing the planning, scheduling, implementation, and evaluation of programs and courses for the Pre-College and Career Preparation Programs department at UCSD Extension. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced public educational program professional to resolve a wide range of educational program issues and needs assessments.

Develops new public educational programs, and works on complex public educational programs of diverse scope. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for delivering courses, presentations and development programs. Receives general instructions and exercises judgment in selecting methods and techniques for course and instructional improvement. Fully knowledgeable in course subject matter and program.

Additional duties include: ongoing course schedule planning, instructor recruiting, student and instructor advising, promotional planning, periodic program and course evaluation and adjustment, and responding to complex programmatic issues. In conjunction with the department director and other stakeholders, participates in long-range strategic planning. Develops outlines for new course curricula and updates, or recommends updates to existing course content.

Participates in the development of strategic marketing plans and coordinates marketing events. Develops and monitors budgets. Works closely with fellow program managers and directors on campus-based initiatives and interfaces regularly with colleges, schools and departments on the main UC San Diego campus and on other campuses across the University of California system, the California State University, and California Community Colleges, among others.

  • Must be available for occasional evenings and weekends. Some overtime during peak periods may be required.

  • May be required to attend conferences and programs both locally and out-of-town, as requested.
  • Proven experience designing, developing and managing educational programs for middle and high-school students within and across campuses and institutions.

  • Thorough experience utilizing marketing concepts including participating in developing marketing plans, targeting audiences, and coordinating marketing events.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and overseeing budgets.

  • Demonstrated experience providing academic advising to students.

  • Demonstrated experience hiring and training instructors.

  • Proven knowledge of, and experience working in, pre-college and career preparation programs, continuing education, professional associations, and corporate contract training.

  • Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.

  • Strong skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.

  • A background check is required for this position.
  • Must have own transportation, insurance, and a valid California Driver License.

Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) training will be required.
