Position Overview

Butler University seeks a part-time (20 hours/week) Laboratory Assistant in the department of Biological Sciences. This position reports to the Teaching Lab Coordinator and will assist in preparing supplies and equipment for undergraduate labs, most labs associated with the major's introductory courses.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Organize and compile set up components of Fundamentals labs and any other lab that requires equipment and chemical preparation. Distribute laboratory equipment and materials for teaching labs.
  • Measure or weigh compounds and solutions for use in the teaching lab protocols.
  • Assist in the inventory management of biological and chemical materials, including safe and effective storage of biological materials, as well as the appropriate disposal of biological and chemical materials and waste.
  • Additional Responsibilities:

  • Work with student lab technicians to prep particular teaching lab exercises and activities.
  • Assist with building and maintenance of bacterial stock cultures.
  • Qualifications and Requirements:

  • The laboratory assistant must possess an Associate's degree and have a minimum of 1-year experience working in a lab with an intermediate college-level understanding of genetics, cell biology, and microbiology.
  • Have an intermediate college-level understanding of general chemistry, including the ability to properly calculate, measure, and prepare solutions. Basic computer software familiarity of Word and Excel are required.
  • Oversee the work of undergraduate helpers.
