Communications Specialist - Office of Strategic Communications

Requirements

The Office of Strategic Communications reports directly to the Department of Public Affairs and is responsible for: promoting strategic planning and proactive communications on major initiatives; working to promote positive, accurate and fair media coverage of the University; leading internal communications; creating content for and managing Georgetown's digital and social media channels; coordinating across communications units of the University; and, in general, promoting and protecting the University's reputation.
The Communications Specialist supports the leaders and members of the communications team and provides a full range of communications services and support to the office, including support for digital and traditional media, event logistics, and management and execution of creative services projects. The incumbent reports to the Senior Director for Strategic Communications and has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Triages incoming media requests on a daily basis.
  • Generates and files media lists.
  • Compiles and distributes daily news clips.
  • Maintains elements of the website (Georgetown.edu).
  • Manages content management, including text and multimedia assets.
  • Coordinates logistics for high profile events and media interviews.
  • Manages office supplies, subscriptions, and maintains the order and organization of physical office space.
  • Manages and supervises student interns.
  • Serves as an on-call representative of the Office, working flexible hours and responding in a timely and professional manner to inquiries from internal and external constituents, including the news media.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Positive, flexible attitude
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize effectively, work multiple tasks at one time, and meet deadlines for a wide variety of assignments
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Ability to exercise careful judgment and discretion with respect to strategic and confidential material

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated success in conducting media relations research using Cision, TVeyes, LexisNexis or other similar databases
  • Experience in online content production and management using Wordpress, Mailchimp, or similar tools, or willingness and capacity to learn
  • Working familiarity with design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator, or willingness and capacity to learn
