The Assistant/Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications position is responsible for managing the Athletics Communications office and ensures integration with the Athletics Marketing office, to serve USD's 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic teams. Responsible for building the foundation of our Athletics Communications program through vision, staff and budget planning. Additionally, set the direction for our strategic communication and digital efforts. Utilizes knowledge, skills and drive to increase our fan engagement and revenue generating initiatives through creating video and graphic content, compelling stories, marketing and promotional pieces, all while adhering to the brand of University of San Diego athletic programs. Assigned to specific sports by the Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs and provides home game coverage for assigned sports and travel to selected away contests. This position receives general supervision from the Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs, and supervises two full-time employees, communication intern, game staff workers, student assistants and work-study students.

Integrated Marketing Communication
  • Responsible for setting the vision and direction of our Athletics Communications' office.
  • Provide leadership in communications and oversight of broadcasting, digital strategy, social media, publication, logo and branding initiatives; collaborates with the Assistant AD for Marketing and Promotions.
  • Develop innovative ways to advance the department by engaging fans and recruits in a compelling and unique way.
  • Ability to tell USD Athletics story to reach local, regional and national levels.
  • Complement and support the revenue generation team (marketing, sales and development units) by participating to set the direction of a comprehensive annual marketing campaign.
  • Develop, recommend and implement marketing initiatives designed to increase brand awareness.
  • USDToreros.com website construction, brand maintenance and maintain data.
  • Assess effectiveness of all communication and digital initiatives and make recommendations to maximize our efforts.

    Communications Operations
  • Department spokesperson
  • Coordinates statistics and information requests from the Director of Athletics.
  • Serve as department liaison with print and electronic media organizations.
  • Hires game day staff, issue media credentials, and oversee press box/row operations at all home events.
  • Potential travel with sports to away contests in order to provide fan engagement and media coverage.
  • Responsible for home coverage as well as constructs and maintains information on team, coach and player files. Maintains files on athletic department history (including photos, team statistics and records) and administrative data including information on website.
  • Post all local, WCC, NCAA and national post-game results plus other press releases to all media outlets.
  • Other standard media relations duties.
  • Manages the department budget.

    Job Requirements:
    Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in graphic arts/design, marketing, communications or public relations; Master's degree preferred.
  • Associate: at least five years of full-time related experience (Assistant: Two years).
  • Understanding of NCAA rules and regulations strongly preferred.

    Performance Expectations:
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with motion graphics, video production/editing and graphic design.
  • Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, with local media, USD employees, and national media outlets.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Team-oriented individual with willingness to take initiative and desire to work in collegiate athletics.
  • Evenings and weekend work expected due to working home contests.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Heartsaver CPR/AED certification required within six weeks of employment.
  • California driver's license required within six weeks of employment

    Special Conditions of Employment:
  • Some travel for extended periods of time for athletic events.
  • Evening and weekend work essential.

    Background check:
    Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

    Degree Verification Requirement:
