The Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Specialist I for the Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP). VKRP is a partnership between the University of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Education, and school divisions across the Commonwealth. VKRP partners with the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) to provide a comprehensive picture of each student's skills at kindergarten entry and beyond.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $35,360 - $43,680 annually ($17 - $21 per hour).


The ideal candidate will assist the project with both public-facing technology support and research/implementation coordination. The incumbent is responsible for providing support to customers, including teachers, principals, and administrators of the VKRP and PALS systems, through the VKRP and PALS hotlines and online chat support program. An understanding of customer support and creating efficient trouble-shooting processes and procedures is ideal. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting in testing added features and the management of online users and assessments on the VKRP web application system.

The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the purchase and distribution of assessment materials to support teachers and other users of the VKRP.  Duties also include helping to maintain project timelines and deliverables and implementing project changes designed by senior researchers as necessary. 



  • A Bachelor's Degree in Education, Psychology, Educational Technology, or a related field is required.  Experience working in education or educational research is required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to interact effectively with a diverse team of internal and external constituencies.
  • Knowledge and skill in using Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word), and content management systems is essential and required.


  • Any experience as a technology support specialist or customer support in an educational organization is a plus. Time working as a student may be considered.
