The Director of the Earth Ethics Institute (EEI) works to fulfill the vision and mission of EEI through the execution of strategies focused on developing and supporting faculty in the area of Earth Literacy and sustainable education: enhancing cross-discipline curriculum development; and promoting student engagement in environmental-related activities and events. The Director represents MDC and its commitment to addressing the ecological crisis of the Earth community by working with Earth literacy and environmental leaders, universities, and ecological and community-based organizations at the local, regional, national and international levels. The position also serves as a leader on the Social Change Initiatives (SCI) team to promote the College’s focus on changemaking through various social and environmental sustainability efforts that engage students, faculty and staff. This is a Professional Exempt Contractual (PEC) position for which an annual contract reflecting the base salary within the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) will be issued after ratification by Miami Dade College’s District Board of Trustees.

  • Serves as the lead subject matter expert (SME) on Earth Literacy and sustainability education
  • Serves as the primary liaison to EEI’s Advisory Board (external) and EEI Council (internal) and ensures communication between EEI Advisory Board, MDC Foundation and the College
  • Maintains SCI department efforts aligned with EEI’s mission of fostering the infusion of Earth literacy throughout programming and curricula
  • Leads the development of innovative professional development programming and academic credit and non-credit programs on Earth literacy, sustainability education, UN Global Goals, academic service-learning, and civic literacy/engagement in collaboration with faculty and other SCI content experts
  • Provides consultation to student-related programming to expose students to Earth Literacy and environmental sustainability concepts
  • Prepares annual reports required through EEI founding agreement and MDC Foundation
  • Plans and manages budgetary earnings of the EEI endowment funds in collaboration with Director of SCI
  • Provides support in seeking and securing additional resources to accomplish the goals of EEI and the College’s changemaking initiative
  • Supports the dissemination of EEI’s work and MDC’s changemaking efforts locally, nationally and internationally
  • Serves as a key member of the college-wide leadership team for SCI and EEI
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in related field with seven (7) years of related experience and working knowledge of Earth Literacy, sustainable education, curriculum development or related field; or Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in related discipline and three (3) years of related experience and working knowledge of Earth Literacy, sustainable education, curriculum development or related field
  • All Degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
  • Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures
  • Extensive knowledge of Earth literacy and sustainability education
  • Strong understanding of civic engagement and democratic learning scholarship and practices
  • Knowledge of curriculum content development and instructional design
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability with academic-related processes such asteaching and learning
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office software and specific computer programs related to area of responsibility
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Possess strong decision making skills
  • Ability to provide leadership for program and curriculum development, including practical understanding of diverse and adult learning styles
  • Ability to plan and manage a budget
  • Ability to work independently when performing analytical tasks such as design, design processes and user requirements
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evening and weekend assignments as needed
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with user communities of diverse backgrounds and skill levels
