    PURPOSE

    The Staff Attorney is the legal officer of the College and responsible for managing the College’s legal affairs and overseeing legal services to the College. The Staff Attorney provides legal advice and services to the College and works with the President, Board of Regents administration, faculty, student organizations and staff. The Staff Attorney reports to the President of the College related to all job duties and performance as the College’s legal officer.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide legal support to the President and at the President’s direction to College administrators, including legal advice and opinion letters and preparing legal documents that support the College and its mission
  • Coordinate external counsel
  • Undertake proactive action to protect the College from exposure to litigation
  • Assist with bequests to the institution, trust documents, grants, and special programs/partnerships
  • Prepare and review policies and procedures, regulations, bylaws, and other documents to ensure compliance with municipal, state, and federal regulations
  • Prepare and review contracts involving construction, leases, licenses, purchases, sales, insurance, employment, research, and related matters
  • At the President’s direction, confer with College administrators, faculty, employees, and student organizations on matters involving legal interpretation and decisions related to College activities, policy questions, and operating problems
  • Advise the President on academic issues and policies such as intellectual property, domain ownership and licensing, and academic and disciplinary matters. Educate and train the College community about legal issuesAssume additional responsibilities as requested by the President
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERTISE

  • J.D. from an accredited law school;
  • Current membership in good standing in the California State Bar or the ability to become Registered In-House Counsel in California;
  • Preference for candidates with substantive experience in the legal representation of academic institutions, including (i) 6 years+ in practice, 3+ years advising academic institutions, either in an in-house or outside counsel capacity, (ii) deep knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to academic institutions, and (iii) good familiarity in general with the operational and organizational environment in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work under deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability to gain trust and inspire confidence at all levels of an academic institution;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex issues and legal concepts to non-lawyers;
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate effectively through and successfully work with the different departments and constituencies within a college community;
  • Excellent presentation and project management skills; and
  • Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills.

  • Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment
  • Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files

    At Life West, our program prepares the chiropractor to function as a specialized health care provider, offering care on a direct-access, initial contact basis.
