As part of a small and active communications team, the Sr. Communications Associate will support the communications needs of both the cancer center and the medical center by compiling and distributing email newsletters, writing news stories about activities at the medical center, providing communications support for events and performing administrative tasks.
The Sr. Communications Associate reports to the Director of Communications in the GUMC Office of Communications and works with two directors (GUMC and Lombardi) to assemble and distribute weekly email newsletters to students, faculty and staff across the medical center. The Sr. Communications Associate will also work closely with the Senior Director of Communications and the Assistant Communications Director on other communications needs such as logistical support for events and providing news coverage.
Additionally, the Sr. Communications Associate will work with the Director of Communications (Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center) to send broadcast emails about upcoming meetings and events, collect publications authored and grants received by faculty members, support functions specific to the renewal of the Cancer Center Support Grant.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree, preferably in communication, journalism, marketing or a related field
1-3 years of work experience in a communications role preferred
Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage/balance simultaneous tasks.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and maturity. Ability to take initiative, work well independently and exercise good judgment when dealing with sensitive information.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Editorial judgment, strategic thinking and executive decision-making skills. Ability to support editorial functions related to new and recurring events.
Strong time management and organization skills. Ability to prioritize and work towards short- and long-term goals.
Preferred requirements and qualifications:
Wordpress, photography and graphic design skills, as well as experience with Constant Contact, journalism and media relations preferred.
Interest in and enthusiasm for digital and visual communications, health and medicine, medical research strongly preferred.
