Departmental Overview
Berkeley Regional Services (BRS) is comprised of six (6) Regions which provide services to specific "groupings/clusters" of schools, colleges, and organized research units (5 academic, 1 all other). This regional approach to providing administrative services is intended to improve service quality by re-establishing personal connections and to develop more local expertise.

The Professional Schools region (ProS) serves the University Extension, Berkeley Law, Goldman School of Public Policy, Haas School of Business, School of Optometry, School of Public Health, Graduate School of Education, School of Social Welfare and the School of Journalism.

ProS helps UC Berkeley Faculty and Principal Investigators (PIs) focus on their groundbreaking and world-class research efforts by providing customized administrative and management support for research proposals, grants, awards, and contracts throughout various steps in the lifecycle.

Research Administrators (RAs) are master jugglers. They:
  • Develop and/or oversee research proposals, awards, and transactions in contract and grant management
  • Maintain records in compliance with institutional and sponsor policies
  • Manage grant, contract, and award administrative work
  • Act as liaisons between departments and collaborate with campus partners to administer financial and accounting services for sponsored awards

    Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision, organizes, plans, establishes and monitors fiscal budget control of contracts and grants administration, gifts, endowments and privately funded projects for faculty research programs.
  • Ensures complete and accurate collection of research administration at all stages of the contract and grant life cycle. Provides standard financial reports and projections.
  • Under general supervision, serves as the primary faculty liaison, assists Principal Investigators (PI) with the development of straightforward contract and grant proposals including reviewing RFP and drafting summary of content, gathering data and responding to requests for information; researching and compiling information required; simple proposal budgets.
  • Prepares support documentation as required by proposal guidelines and coordinates proposal submissions with Sponsored Projects Office.
  • With higher-level research administrators, analyzes transactions, expenditures, identifies and resolves discrepancies, creates financial and inventory reports. Informs higher-level RAs of potential overdrafts and recommends routine action to resolve and prevent overdrafts going forward.
  • Participates in training/educational sessions designed to increase knowledge of professional research administration concepts and practices, and CSS, University, and/or funding agency processes and policies.
  • Assists in support of audit as directed by senior staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications
  • Requires independent judgment and strong organization and communication skills and customer service focus.
  • Knowledgeable in applicable federal, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines.
  • Knowledgeable in applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, et cetera.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
  • Demonstrated ability on analyze and interpret data.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply guidelines and policies.
  • Proficiency working with computer and information management systems.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships and partner with other departments in the campus community.
  • Excellent initiative, organization skills, attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to participate and contribute as a member of a team in support of unit goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.

    Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • 1-2 years' experience in working with student funding, human resources/payroll, contracts and grants, or equivalent related experience.

    Salary & Benefits
    This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
