Library Environment:

The Henry Madden Library at California State University, Fresno, is the largest academic library in California between Los Angeles and San Francisco. With over 1.5 million visitors a year, the 339,000-square foot library serves as the hub of the campus community. It provides innovative services including technology lending to both faculty and students, a growing digital repository, integrated information literacy instruction, and student-centered campus partnerships. The library has helped lead the CSU's transition to a system-wide unified library management system, ALMA, with full transition completed in the 2018 fiscal year. The library has over a million print volumes, hundreds of thousands of electronic resources, and significant special collections of children's literature, teacher resources, music and media, World's Fair materials, local and regional history, and hosts numerous rotating exhibitions and campus and community events. The library also uses 3M's RFID system to safeguard its assets. Library personnel include 18 library faculty, 39 support staff, and 29 FTE student assistants. Position Overview:

The Director of Development plays a critical role on the library leadership team in the achievement of the principle objective of ensuring Henry Madden Library’s current and future financial viability through the management of a program for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of potential donors and sustaining relationships with alumni, individual and corporate donors and community partners.

The Director of Development is responsible for securing significant and ongoing financial support for the Henry Madden Library and consistently enhancing the pool of future donors to ensure growth in both the traditional and non-traditional revenue streams received by the Library.

As a key member of the library senior management team, this position is responsible for making a positive commitment to the Library’s mission, vision, and values. Due to the nature of this position, some evening and weekend work as well as travel is required.

The Director of Development for Henry Madden Library reports to the Associate Vice President for University Development, in close cooperation with the Dean of the Henry Madden Library, and is a member of the University Advancement team. The incumbent is responsible for managing and facilitating the Henry Madden Library’s efforts in fund raising. The Director of Development is responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Director, in partnership with the Dean, will plan and implement development and campaign strategies on behalf of the Henry Madden Library, including providing staff support to one or more volunteer groups.

The Henry Madden Library supports the University mission of education, research and service. To this end, the Library selects, develops, manages and provides access to information resources; promotes the critical use of information for learning and research; and presents cultural and scholarly programming that serves the campus, region and beyond.

Compensation

The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an attractive benefits package which includes but is not limited to: a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month; 12+ paid holidays; excellent choice of medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance; and retirement benefits.

Position Summary

The major duties of the job include:

  • Develop new strategies to build and maintain a competitive position for securing gifts and maximizing giving opportunities to the Henry Madden Library and enable the achievement of the broader University Advancement development operation goals. Experience in strategy development and implementation is required.
  • Responsible for meeting ambitious financial and visit goals, set on an annual basis.
  • Conduct major gift calls and visits to individuals, corporations, and foundations both independently and with faculty, staff, and volunteers. Excellent proposal writing skills are required.
  • Oversee and manage the day to day operations of a diverse donor and prospect portfolio of significant individual and organizational donors and sustain a program of donor stewardship activities. Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills are necessary.
  • Work with a wide range of individuals such as students and campus deans to corporate leaders and alumni contemplating a charitable bequest.
  • Conduct prospect research to identify new potential donors such as individuals, alumni, corporations, foundations, and organizations.
  • Remain current with post-secondary education activities and trends in demographics and giving activities in the higher education and advancement in the methodologies and vehicles of fundraising.
  • Work closely with University Advancement as well as internal and external colleagues and volunteers to keep apprised of trends in giving, methods of identifying and evaluating potential donors and time sensitive opportunities as they arise.
  • Identify and incorporate new and leading-edge fundraising vehicles and methodologies throughout the development cycle from potential donor identification through to stewardship.
  • Create dynamic and fluid action plans out of the business plans which focus on the achievement of significant dollar and donor acquisition goals as well as the ongoing stewardship of new and existing donors to ensure their continued commitment to the University.
  • Engage in the regular evaluation of efficiency and results of the plan, seek input from colleagues and share information of relevance to other fundraising portfolios and activities.
  • Represent Advancement and the Henry Madden Library to the internal and external community by being both informed, articulate and enthusiastic about the mission and work of the Library.
  • Facilitate meetings with internal and external constituents.
  • Monitor and report on a budget specific to the portfolio’s budget needs and expenditures.
  • Actively seek out and analyze demographic giving data and effectively employ this information in the development of fund-raising plans and strategies.
  • Establish relationships within the collegial network of fundraising professionals and establish a presence as a participant in the profession by way of attendance at professional conferences and involvement in professional associations.
  • Keep apprised of University initiatives, events, faculty and staff, policies and issues.
  • Remain up-to-date and informed of activities within the business community and industries with specific alignment to Fresno State and higher education.
  • Gather, calculate, evaluate, and understand statistics related to donor giving patterns in the Henry Madden Library.
  • Participate as a member of the Henry Madden Library advancement team. Attend regular meetings with the Dean of the school/college/area to discuss progress on reaching and identifying new advancement goals;
  • Liaison to Campus Units: Frequently interacts with the Vice President for University Advancement, AVP for Development, Henry Madden Library Dean, University Vice Presidents, and other Senior Administrators to identify projects for private fundraising;
  • Prospect Identification: Occasionally reviews annual giving records, public information and volunteer suggestions for likely major gift prospects;
  • Prospect Qualification: Frequently meets with prospects to assess their capacity and propensity for major gifts;
  • Prospect Cultivation: Frequently plans and implements strategic steps to move prospects toward a major gift decision;
  • Prospect Solicitation: Frequently develops and presents major gift proposals to prospects;
  • Principal Gifts: Occasionally works with senior administrators to develop prospect strategies and proposals for gifts greater than $250,000;
  • Donor Stewardship: Regularly interacts with donors to ensure good stewardship of gifts received;
  • Special Events: Occasionally organizes and presents special events designed to engage prospects;
  • Boards and Volunteer Engagement: Frequently interacts with volunteer leaders and boards to engage them in the mission of the Henry Madden Library;
  • Annual Fundraising: Occasionally manages college based solicitations and special campaigns, interfaces often with central Annual Giving office on strategies and scripts for solicitation.
  • Lead the Friends of the Library program and solicit members for additional gifts. Also, develop Friends of the Library membership acquisition and renewal processes.
  • Work in partnership with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations and Direct of Planned Giving on gifts to the Henry Madden Library.

Secondary duties of the job include:

  • Area Support: Occasionally works on projects not directly related to fundraising at the direction of the Associate Vice President for Development;
  • University wide representation: Occasionally works on projects outside of the assigned school/college as directed by the Associate Vice President;
  • Support and/or lead fundraising efforts for mini-campaigns and comprehensive campaigns.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required from a regionally accredited institution;
  • Minimum of four years of increasingly responsible and successful fundraising experience or professional experience with transferable skills such as sales, marketing or public relations;
  • Experience with a nonprofit organization;
  • Experience with capital/comprehensive campaigns and/or specific experience in major gift solicitation, corporate­ foundation relations or constituent relations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated track record in working with individuals and groups, ability to work as a member of a team, recognition of the importance of education to individuals and society as a whole;
  • Exposure to management, including budgetary responsibilities;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Highly motivated and proven self-starter, creative and entrepreneurial characteristics;
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the university from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio­economic backgrounds;
  • Flexibility to travel as needed to develop and maintain relationships;
  • Competency and experience with the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and the internet;
  • History of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations.

  • Master's or other advance degree preferred;
  • Experience/background in higher education;
