The Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor or Social Worker will be a full-time position for 2019-20. The role will be responsible for supporting a caseload of students in Chicago and Wheeling (most weeks: 4 days in CH and 1 day in WH). Hours will be Monday through Friday from 9am till 5pm but may be adjusted to meet students needs.

Position StatusFull TimeIf part time, hours per weekWhat you will do:

The Licensed Counselor will play an integral role within the growing Undergraduate College (UGC) and will work to optimize the student experience for those who need the most extensive wraparound service support. The transition to college is often emotionally stressful – additionally, the majority of UGC students are first generation, many are low-income, many have experienced trauma, and some have been receiving mental health counseling through the public school system for years and do not have access to health insurance to continue care independently. Currently, Student Success Coaches and Faculty are usually a student’s first stop to work through issues of concern. In order to better support our students with the highest needs, the Licensed Counselor will provide additional mental health counseling, both individual and in group settings, to referred students so that they can move toward successful completion of a bachelor’s degree. In addition, this role will also support the Success Coaching team by creating mental health related professional development as well as building protocols (in partnership with the Office of Student Experience) to help students in crisis. The Licensed Counselor will also support students and the larger team by advocating and utilizing community resources to provide wraparound services and comprehensive case management.
The ideal candidate will be proactive in helping coaches identify students and engage them in care on a regular basis as well as serving as an advocate for students. The Licensed Counselor will follow all University policies, collaborate with the University’s Behavior Intervention Team, and build partnerships across departments. Additionally, the candidate must be passionate about supporting first generation and underrepresented college students toward successful degree completion and entry into the workforce. The position will be based at NLU’s Chicago campus and will also spend at least one day per week at NLU’s Wheeling campus.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide a rigorous, affordable college education in a supportive environment that respects diversity to help all students meet and surpass their personal, academic, and career goals.
CORE VALUES

  • Student-Focused: Make decisions based on what is best for students with the belief that when all students have access to resources and support, they are empowered to achieve success.

  • Expect Excellence: Hold high expectations for our students and for the faculty and staff who serve them, and hold ourselves accountable for achieving excellence.

  • Personalized Support: Take a holistic approach to providing individualized support that encourages students to realize their full potential in college and beyond.

Be positively restless and relentless!
Outcomes:

In this role you will:

  • Provide direct mental health counseling to students in the Undergraduate College as identified by Faculty and Student Success Coaches. When appropriate, include wraparound resource support and solution-focused action planning.

  • Develop and engage in outreach efforts with the student population in order to lessen stigmas around seeking mental health counseling, including facilitating group sessions. Work closely with Coaches in order to better understand student population and specific needs and follow through on referrals.

  • Create and deliver quarterly mental health related professional development to staff and faculty; build protocols to help students in crisis; other related projects as needed.

  • Serve on SAMSHA (Department of Health and Human Services Garrett Lee Suicide Campus Prevention Program grant Advisory Committee) and support other university initiatives (further developing resources for undocumented students and parenting students).

  • Further develop wraparound supports for students to address environmental challenges: food pantry, homelessness advocacy and referrals, assisting with government assistance applications, substance abuse referrals; visiting all resources and organize by target neighborhoods.
Your Competencies:
