The Department Chairperson provides academic leadership to the Natural Sciences, Health and Wellness Department and serves as an integral member of the College and Campus administrative team. This individual facilitates learning, quality teaching, scholarships and services. The Department Chairperson also provides support and advice in the collective bargaining process, and ensures adherence to relevant areas of any collective bargaining agreement. This is a Professional Exempt Contractual (PEC) position for which an annual contract reflecting the base salary within the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) will be issued after ratification by Miami Dade College’s District Board of Trustees.

    Supervises the development and/ or revision of curricula, and implements instructional programsDevelops course schedules and faculty assignmentsHires, supervises and evaluates personnelPrepares and maintains departmental budgetsManages labs, equipment, and other departmental resourcesEnsures the effective implementation of the faculty advancement processesProvides program information and ensures the availability of advisement services for studentsServes on Campus and College-wide committees Participates in the development and implementation of College policies, procedures, and guidelinesTeaches at least one (1) course within the discipline per academic yearResolves issues and problems that may arise with faculty, staff, and studentsProvides training opportunities for employeesMaintains SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) accreditation compliance

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics or related discipline from a regionally accredited institution and five (5) years relevant work experience in higher education and/ or teaching.
  • All educational degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
  • Knowledge and understanding of the College’s organization, goals, objective, policies, and proceduresKnowledge of the requirements of the accreditation agenciesKnowledge and understanding of a wide range of instructional systems development, training methods, techniques and formatsExcellent organizational and communication skills (oral and written)Skill in budget preparation and managementAbility to supervise and train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignmentsStrong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse multi-ethnic and multi-cultural communityAbility to write and implement STEM grantsAbility to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business communityAbility to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/ or boards of directors Possess computer skills Ability to work in a multi-ethnic/ multi-cultural environmentMust be able to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend assignment
