Departmental Overview
The Cal Youth Camps Swim Lesson Program offers American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. We are looking for enthusiastic, caring and well qualified staff to teach and oversee our swim lessons to children between the ages of 5-13 years. Lessons are located at the beautiful Strawberry Canyon pool and the Golden Bear Pool in the Berkeley hills. These are temporary spring and summer positions. These are temporary summer and fall positions.

Responsibilities
I. Supervision (35%)

Supervise and evaluate swim staff working in specified program. Provide written evaluations on all staff.

Organize, implement, and document training program including bi-weekly staff meetings.

Assist Director to ensure staff have current required certifications and provide trainings as needed.

As directed by supervisor, schedule staff and secure substitutes for swim lesson programs.

Ensure staff are following stated CYOP policies and procedures and providing safe, fun swim lessons. Provide corrective feedback and discipline if necessary.

II. Administrative (30%)

Provide general supervision (including in locker room) and downtime activities for all campers in his/her care

Account for all campers, take attendance regularly, and follow check-in/out procedures

Walk children safely between locations and on water/bathroom breaks

Assist campers with belongings, lost and found, sunscreen/water, trash pick-up, etc.

Resolve disciplinary problems appropriately, complete Incident Reports as needed

Demonstrate good judgment

III. Programmatic (30%)

Prepare for swim lesson programs (i.e. facilities, equipment, rosters, lifeguard). Provide on-deck supervision.

Supervise, organize, and execute swim lessons, including: assigning children to levels, staffing assignments, parent orientation & check-in. With Camp Coordinator manage locker room swim changes.

Establish regular and open communication with on-site Camp Coordinators, CYOP Directors, Weekend Supervisor, etc.

Administer first aid as needed and in accordance with set procedures.

Evaluate existing programs and logistics on an ongoing basis and develop methods to improve program and service delivery.

Ensure staff have safe and appropriate equipment and supplies.

Develop and manage a system to return lost and found.

IV. Other (5%)

Displays appropriate behavior (action and language) around participants, campers, parents, and staff.

Follows all policies and procedures including, wearing camp uniform and following agreed upon work schedule.

Demonstrates good judgment.

Maintains current certifications: LGT, CPR/FPR.

Fills in for Strawberry Canyon staff or receptionists as needed.

Performs miscellaneous tasks as requested by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

2-3 years' experience with youth camps or outdoor programs.

Experience assisting with the supervision of swim instructors, aquatics facilities, and swimming lessons.

Has advanced knowledge of aquatics programs activities.

Previous experience working with age level specific to the aquatics activity.

Position requires work leadership and inter-personal skills for those in a lead capacity, and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.

Service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, develop original ideas, creative problem solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.

Must be able to work effectively, across all organization levels, internally and externally .

Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking.

Must have highly effective verbal and written communication skills.

Must be proficient in the use of basic computer applications.

Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.

Sensory abilities (hearing, seeing, etc.) necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Licenses or certifications:

Current American Red Cross Certifications (or equivalent) in Water Safety Instruction, Standard First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers.

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma and college graduation or equivalent certification is preferred.

Salary & Benefits
The hourly salary of the position is $17.00
