Departmental Overview
Managed by UC Berkeley's Blum Center for Developing Economies, Big Ideas an early-stage, university-based, innovation competition that connects students—the world's next generation of social entrepreneurs—with the mentorship, training, and resources needed to successfully conceptualize, deploy, and scale social innovations. Through its academic year-long program, Big Ideas plugs student entrepreneurs into a robust innovation ecosystem of high-caliber mentors, academics, scientists, tech experts, industry leaders, and investors, enabling them to access the full spectrum of resources needed to bring their ideas to fruition.

Big Ideas seeks a highly entrepreneurial and enthusiastic Network and Program Coordinator to help engage both external audiences (industry, foundations, partners) and internal audiences (students, alumni, faculty) in all aspects of the contest. The Network and Program Coordinator will help lead student outreach, judge and mentor recruitment and stewardship, event management, startup advising, and contest management. Reporting to the Contest Director, the Network and Program Coordinator is responsible for strengthening the existing Big Ideas network of 1,000+ judges, mentors, and advisors, 1,200 alumni, and numerous other collaborators, while simultaneously exploring new, untapped networks and partnership opportunities. Additionally, they support the development of programs, services and events designed to build the capacities and networks of aspiring student entrepreneurs.

Judge and Mentor Recruitment and Stewardship:
  • Lead the identification, recruitment, training and coordination of judges and mentors for the Big Ideas Contest.
  • Serve as a point of contact for all network communications.
  • Develop a systematic process for monitoring the engagement of network members.

    Alumni Engagement:
  • Lead Big Ideas alumni tracking and engagement efforts including developing deploying and analyzing the biannual alumni survey.
  • Find exposure opportunities to highlight successes of Big Ideas alumni and work with the Blum Center to develop communications updates for public dissemination.
  • Through routine personalized outreach to alumni, identify opportunities provide ongoing support to students and their start-ups, and to foster their continued involvement with the program.

    Industry Partner Development:
  • Pursue and steward high-potential partnerships with technology, social impact, and international development companies and NGOs to explore opportunities for new Big Ideas program offerings.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and representative for Big Ideas at various campus forums, social entrepreneurship events and conferences.
  • Identify and cultivate network members who can lead technical skill building workshops.

    Contest Administration/Support:
  • Support the development and implementation of an outreach strategy to engage students across all 13 eligible Big Ideas campuses.
  • Maintain and foster on-campus partnership for opportunities for collaboration.
  • Routinely interact with Big Ideas student teams on proposal and project development: problem identification, market strategy, implementation goals, financial sustainability, partnership development, etc.
  • Provide ongoing connections to students that can lead to the development of new partnerships, funding prospects, networking opportunities, strategies for scaling up, etc.

    Event Organization:
  • Lead the organization of several high profile Big Ideas events such as [email protected], Grand Prize Pitch Day, and the Awards Celebration.
  • Co-design and implement skill development workshops and speaker series. Assist with other Big Ideas events (i.e. workshops, information sessions, trainings) as needed.

    General Contest Administration:
  • Support the team to ensure that all contest pieces are in motion, including survey development, data management, copyediting, M&E etc.

    Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of basic concepts and principles of building and maintaining effective relations with individuals and partners a variety of constituencies (i.e. industries, non-profit organizations, and universities.)
  • Strong understanding of the entrepreneurial, innovation, and international development landscape, both in California and nationally. Experience launching, working for, or with social mission-driven initiatives.
  • Experience managing programs, preferably of similar size and scope.
  • Organizational skills including skill to meet prescribed deadlines; event planning skills.
  • Written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including tact and political acumen to effectively represent the institution.
  • Ability to think creatively and provide thoughtful, agile insights to improve the development of new systems and processes.
  • Background advising or mentoring college and/or adult students.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to handle multiple short-term and long-term responsibilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and time-management skills.
  • Applicable computer skills.
  • A strong team player.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated expertise with building innovative programs within academic institutions and building collaborations between academia and industry.
  • Preexisting strong networks across industry and the startup landscape.
  • Experience developing compelling outreach and digital marketing campaigns.

    *The salary range designated for this position: $50,100 - $55,000; however, starting salary commensurate with experience.
