Departmental Overview
University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) is launching an alumni relations enterprise responsible for creating and overseeing a comprehensive campus-wide alumni engagement strategy and plan focused on the lifelong enrichment of alumni. The newly-created Office of Alumni Relations will serve as the central department for coordination of alumni programs across the university spectrum, developing new programs and working in collaboration with the independent Cal Alumni Association (CAA), schools, colleges, departments and units, reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Development. The Executive Director will serve as the campus-wide strategist for alumni engagement launching this new program and building a team.

Leadership Program Oversight:

  • The Executive Director serves as the chief strategist for alumni engagement at the University.
  • Lead the university's first ever institutional campus-wide alumni relations program.
  • Operationalize the UDAR Strategic Plan for alumni engagement, ensuring that its development and execution are supportive of the mission and vision for alumni engagement.
  • Develop a messaging and branding strategy to elevate the awareness and importance of alumni engagement, showcasing the number and range of opportunities for alumni offered locally, regionally, and globally.
  • Develop a coordinated strategy for regional engagement of alumni in geographic markets with the highest concentration of constituents. Work with development colleagues to create strategic donor cultivation events in each region.
  • Oversee the creation of a coordinated portal/webpage/clearinghouse to capture all lifelong learning content across the Berkeley enterprise. Furthermore, develop a marketing campaign that creates broad awareness of the lifelong learning opportunities available to Berkeley alumni.
  • Leverage the power of the Berkeley alumni base by creating a culture of volunteerism that will inspire, engage, and connect alumni to the university and to each other..
  • Work with UDAR's IT department to create specific alumni engagement reporting standards within Cal Advancement Data System (CADS), the university database of record.
  • Work collaboratively with Marketing and Communications team in the publication of electronic materials that advance alumni engagement and philanthropy.

    Leadership and Strategic Partnership:

  • Serves on UDAR's management team and provides input into UDAR initiatives and business plans, budget, communications, events and overall alumni engagement strategies. .
  • Establish and nurture strong relationships with academic leaders, senior staff, and UDAR colleagues across campus to create a collaborative team environment and to advance alumni engagement at all levels within the University.
  • Build, mentor, and supervise a new team of 2-4 professionals initially with the expectation of eventual departmental growth.
  • Establish and effectively manage a budget of $1M that supports the mission and goals of the University.
  • Partner with the Career Center to facilitate a systematic program of alumni-to-alumni and alumni-to-student career connections.
  • Partner with the Division of Equity & Inclusion (E&I) to create an inclusive, welcoming, and culturally relevant alumni community by expanding pathways for access and success and contributing to scholarship and public service.
  • Partner with the Division of Student Affairs to create a culture of lifelong connection that spans the student continuum and is sustained into the early alumni years for uninterrupted engagement.
  • Establish a campus-wide working group responsible for establishing baseline alumni engagement representing all 14 schools and colleges as well as the Cal Alumni Association and Cal Athletics.
  • Produce an annual alumni relations summit with key campus staff to advance alumni engagement efforts.

    Required Qualifications
    The Executive Director must be an exceptional communicator with outstanding management and relationship-building skills, along with the advancement, and deep alumni relations experience and talent necessary to engage a large and diverse alumni base through best practice engagement programs.

    This individual will also have a solid understanding of annual giving fundraising in this area that is considered a critical element of the University's alumni engagement efforts. They must be able to build a working network of campus stakeholders and unite them in collaborative engagement efforts. Furthermore, the Executive Director will possess the maturity, perspective, and credibility necessary to work effectively with philanthropy colleagues, senior University administrators, and key alumni volunteers.

    In addition, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong, thorough and in-depth knowledge of the campus, including short and long range strategic plans, vision, goals, objectives, infrastructure, programs, achievements and awards.
  • Strong comprehensive knowledge of relevant external constituencies including their composition and primary goals/objectives.
  • Strong knowledge of management principles, including personnel and budget administration and advanced skill in implementing effective personnel and budget operations and practices.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal communication and leadership skills, including attentive listening, and skills to think quickly and respond appropriately.
  • Strong skills in advocating for and representing the institution to its various publics.
  • Strong skills in understanding constituency needs as related to institutional needs and skills in designing solutions or strategies to achieve consensus.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation and political acumen skills.
  • Strategic planning skills.
  • Leadership/management skills, including skills to lead, direct, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.

  • Bachelors degree is required, a graduate degree is preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years higher education experience is preferred
