The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of rare materials in the West. Its holdings include more than 690,000 volumes, 175 million manuscript items, 9 million photographs and other pictorial materials, 86,000 microforms, 4.3 million digital files, and 25,000 maps, as well as numerous other categories of unique material. The two largest collections are the Bancroft Collection of Western and Latin Americana and the Rare Books Collection. The archival and rare book materials of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life are also part of the Bancroft holdings. The Bancroft is home to three research groups: the Oral History Center (formerly the Regional Oral History Office); the Mark Twain Papers; and the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri. The Bancroft Library is an active center of teaching and research. Supporting the programs of about 30 campus departments annually, it mounts a regular series of public exhibitions, roundtable lectures, and open houses. Responsibilities
This position applies advanced professional concepts to perform highly complex responsibilities for special collections and rare books, including acquisitions and processing of newly acquired materials in all formats, and other library related processes and projects for the Bancroft Library, the Mark Twain Papers & Project, the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri, and the University Archives. Duties include:

  • Serves as selector for books, serials, sound recordings, broadsides, manuscripts and archives using subject specific reviewing sources, general catalogs, and direct contact with writers and poets, bringing relevant materials to curators' attention.
  • Reviews dealer and auction catalogs; prepares research memos for purchases or gifts for Rare Books curator. Assists selectors with budget requests and allocations, meets with potential donors, and acts as a vendor contact.
  • Prepares correspondence and gift agreements. Accessions materials in various databases/online catalogs and reports to Development Office. Handles extensive communication with donors. Occasionally retrieves collections from donors. Reviews duplicative material for retention, or disposal.
  • Contributes cataloging content for serials, series, and other multi-part materials; assists with mid-sized orders and payments with multiple functions and cross-boundary responsibilities. Contributes descriptive metadata about new archival acquisitions in the library's collection management tool and performs complex authority and subject headings work in preparing collections for cataloging in local systems.
  • Creates documentation of serials processing procedures and functions, setting goals and priorities for the unit in this area of responsibility.
  • Assists with mid-sized orders and payments across multiple functions and divisional responsibilities; acts as liaison with library administration/business services, selectors or other staff members in establishing appropriate acquisition/processing arrangements.

    This position works with teams of library professionals, for various special processing/cataloging projects or works with librarians or other staff members in acquiring or processing material.

    Required Qualifications
  • Strong computer and typing skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple work assignments.
  • Library acquisitions and/or processing experience.
  • Valid CA Driver's license.
  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in special collection library and/or archive.
  • Experience with collection development, selection, and purchasing.
  • Experience with gift management and payment processing.
  • Experience performing cataloging and bibliographic maintenance.
  • Familiarity with Archival Management Systems and Integrated Library Systems.
  • Knowledge of modern European languages.
  • Familiarity with 20th-21st century American literature, poetry and cultures.

    Salary & Benefits
    The annual salary range of the position is $50,100.00 - $73,300.00, commensurate with experience.
