Under the direction of the College Provost, the Dean of Student Affairs is the lead Student Affairs professional at the college. The Dean is responsible for enhancing the quality of undergraduate student life through the development and coordination of co-curricular programs that promote student learning and development, foster student mental health and overall well-being, and reflect the college’s and university’s themes, principles, and traditions. As a member of the college’s senior management team, the Dean of Student Affairs works collaboratively and creatively with other college leaders to establish a comprehensive living and learning environment for students throughout their undergraduate careers. The Dean of Student Affairs provides oversight for residential life, student organizations and leadership opportunities, student government, judicial affairs, community development, college facilities which support student affairs’ functions and all other aspects of the co-curricular life of undergraduate students at the college, including crisis management. The Dean of Student Affairs has managerial responsibility for the supervision and training of professional and support staff and develops and administers the college’s Student Affairs budget in consultation with the Colleges Business Office (CBO) under the oversight of the College Provost.


The Dean of Student Affairs has a collaborative relationship with the Vice Chancellor Student Affairs and participates in the development and implementation of campus-wide Student Affairs strategic goals and objectives and assists in the management of campus-wide programs and events and represents the college/provost in campus-wide student life matters. The Dean of Student Affairs also has a collaborative relationship with the Deans from UC San Diego’s other six colleges, and meets regularly with them to develop campus wide goals, and on decisions regarding student conduct and Academic Integrity violations and other issues.

  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience in a complex organization with proven ability to apply management principles, lead staff, organize and set priorities, and establish unit goals and outcomes.

  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization. Knowledge of the theories and principles of higher education, undergraduate education, student development and student learning. Skills in conceptualizing, analyzing and interpreting broad issues, policies and regulations and in-depth knowledge of and the ability to interpret the policies and procedures relevant to all aspects of undergraduate student life.

  • Strong knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Thorough understanding of the developmental tasks appropriate to undergraduates students, with a corresponding ability to conceptualize and implement programs to meet a variety of students needs in a variety of developmental areas. Counseling and advising skills appropriate to student needs. Skill in conflict resolution, negotiation and counseling referrals. Proven ability to manage crisis and emergency situations.

  • Skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements. Demonstrated skills in selecting, supervising, training, motivating and evaluating professional and administrative staff.

  • Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Proven leadership experience and the ability to act independently and exercise sound judgment.

  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership, and intercultural competence. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, with individuals and before groups, with particular emphasis on interactions with staff, faculty, students, and parents.

  • Proven knowledge of University policies, processes, and procedures. Skills in conceptualizing, analyzing and interpreting broad issues, policies and regulations and in-depth knowledge of and the ability to interpret the policies and procedures relevant to all aspects of undergraduate student life.

  • Knowledge and skills in the management of budgets, personnel, and facilities with the demonstrated ability to use these skills effectively.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of institutional research methodology for program assessment and evaluation; proven knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.

  • Knowledge of national trends and best practices in higher education.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-functional and multi-tiered environment.
