Departmental Overview
The Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology (SCET) is the premiere institution at UC Berkeley for the study and practice of entrepreneurship and technology innovation. SCET is globally recognized for developing the Berkeley Method, an internationally recognized approach to teaching technology entrepreneurship to undergraduates, innovation to Ph.D. students, and technology firm leadership to professionals and executives. As part of our mission, the Global Programs Office at SCET offers academic programs for international students and programs for our university and corporate partners.

We are looking for a professional, highly energetic person with interest and related experience in international programs with a particular focus on international student services. The role will report to the Director of Global Academic Programs, but will also support the Director of Global Engagement.

Responsibilities
30% Within an academic department/school/college or organization, provides student services in the following areas:

Applies professional Student Services concepts in providing a variety of student services to SCET international student populations. Populations include, but are not limited to, Start-up Semester Students, Start-Up Fellows, Visiting Researchers, Visiting Scholars, and GLOBE.

Provides advice and assistance to students and internal/external partners on:
- Course scheduling, requirements and student course progression, and advises department on scheduling needs.
- Student enrollment in SCET and UC Berkeley courses.
- Language and visa requirements.
- Non-degree academic questions.
- General inquiries from prospective and current program participants.

25% Academic Advising: Provides advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and major requirements; assists students in determining a major, alternative academic options, resolve scheduling conflicts, and similar issues.

Assists students and affiliated representatives in enrollment, enrollment changes, including cancellation/withdrawals from programs, course selections/requirements, other non-degree academic questions, and similar issues.

Creates communication materials, including email updates, notifications, website, and other channels including coordinating with department communications and marketing teams

Verifies completion of enrollment requirements and eligibility for the SCET Certificate. Generates and distributes Certificates.

Provides information to students and faculty regarding campus policies and procedures on student conduct.

25% Recruitment and Admissions: Implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; reviews domestic transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits to Berkeley.

Participates in outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions and programs as needed and in participation with the Director. Advises prospective applicants and international institutions and organizations on necessary academic preparation, application, requirements and other related questions about participating in programs or partnerships.

Responds to general partner inquiries and sets up appointments for visitors.

Organizes data on international partnerships and partner benefits in Google Drive, responds to partner inquiries and manages partner correspondence.

Participates in the processing of the Third-Party Contracts for the affiliated international institutions and organizations. Drafts and sends correspondence to partner organizations.
Plans and implements onboarding events.

15% Events: Coordinates and implements non-complex student events and assists in the planning and implementation of complex events.

Coordinates and participates in orientations of new international students and new affiliated international institutions and organizations. Coordinates special events and manages planning and logistics.

Understands the position may require non-standard work hours during peak periods or for special events programs.

Limited international travel in support of recruiting events.

5% Financial Aid: Participates in the processing, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, and other awards; advises students on financial aid options.

Advises students on payment options and deadlines; addresses any payment- and fee-related questions and issues in collaboration with other campus units (e.g. academic departments, UC Extension), and internal stakeholders.

Works with the SCET Director of Operations on invoicing and collections.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures.
  • Understanding of University rules and regulations.
  • Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Skills in service orientation, active listening, critical thinking.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning.
  • Ability to multi-task, verbal communication, written communication, organization.
  • Experience with the federal visa regulations.
  • Experience working with international students, institutions, agencies, or experience in studying abroad.
  • Knowledge of foreign language(s).

    Preferred Qualifications
    *Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
    *Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.

    *The hourly salary range designated for this position: $20.00 - $30.00; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.

    *This is a one-year contract position. Contract positions may be extended based on operational demand. Contract positions are eligible to participate in the health and welfare programs offered by UC Berkeley.
