Northland College, a private liberal arts college located on the beautiful shores of Lake Superior, seeks a Director of Residential Life.

The Director of Residential Life (DRL) is a 12 month professional staff appointment and a key position within the Student Affairs division. The DRL is a student-centered leader with responsibility for the holistic development of students and fostering healthy, vibrant residential communities. They will lead a team of two professional staff and twenty student staff in residential life to enhance the student experience and to promote growth, involvement in learning beyond the classroom, and engagement in campus life.

The DRL will have the primary responsibility for oversight of campus housing which is an integral part of the experience at Northland. Typical work will include: leadership and direction for residential life; act in a leadership capacity within the Student Affairs division; development and oversight of healthy, resilient residential communities; selection, training, and supervision of staff; student conduct and critical incident response; collaboration and communication with Campus Safety and Facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS The items below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements for the performance of this job. It is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities or requirements.

Leadership and Direction Hire, train, supervise and evaluate residential life professional staff (2 FT Student Leadership Advisors) and twenty student staff including Head Resident Assistants (HRA) and RA (resident assistant). Plan and implement annual training programs for student staff; coordinate frequent in-service training/professional development opportunities; conduct annual performance evaluations of all staff. Participate in on-call crisis management and serve as a first-responder including serving as the "person on call" for SLA staff.     Conduct meetings including:  regular one-on-one supervision meetings for SLA staff, regular staff meetings for SLA staff and regular discussions with Campus Safety and Facilities leadership.

Community Development and Education Foster a healthy environment within the halls which encourages personal growth and development of residents, along with community responsibility and academic success. Direct the development of social and educational programs in collaboration with campus programming, which are consistent with fostering the ongoing expansion and development of each individual and social capacity within the residential communities. Facilitate the resolution of roommate, individual or group conflicts within the residential community. Serve as a liaison to Northland College Student Association (NCSA) staff and foster consistent meetings.  

Administration and Collaboration Act in a leadership capacity within the division and as an engaged team member with Student Affairs staff to facilitate student’s co-curricular engagement, assist in crisis situations, and refer students to campus resources where appropriate. Assist the Dean of Students in the preparation and development of departmental budgets. Direct the creation of monthly reports regarding current residential occupancy numbers and maintain accurate summary of student meal plans. Develop long and short-term residential facility maintenance plans in coordination with the Dean of Students and Facilities Director

Interacts with Northland College staff, students, and faculty in a positive manner while supportive of institutional goals. Handles sensitive and confidential information in a professional manner.  

Qualifications

Master Degree in Student Personnel, higher education, or comparable field Minimum of 3-4 years post-degree full time professional live-in experience with progressively responsible supervisory and management experience in Residential Life A valid driver's license, good driving record, and willingness to become a certified to driver of campus vehicles Demonstrated and proven skills in Management of multiple, competing priorities Crisis-management/on-call experience Self-motivation with minimal supervision Excellent written and oral communication Operating with a flexible schedule as needed during peak times
