The Managing Director, Experiential Programs will be responsible for the management and execution of a University-wide experiential learning program where multidisciplinary teams formed from undergraduate, graduate and professional students explore potential markets for an innovation, evaluate the viability of a business model, and develop strategies for bringing it to market and launching a new commercial or social venture. S/he is regularly required to resolve diverse and advanced problems independently, to manage complex logistics for a variety of stakeholders, and to collaborate with existing internal and external partnership programs. The Managing director, Experiential Programs, reports to the I&E Director of Graduate Studies and works closely with the entire I&E team.

Work PerformedDevelop, implement, and administer a University-wide experiential entrepreneurship learning program for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Provide program administration including day-to-day oversight over all aspects of this multi-faceted program. (30%)

Collaborate and cultivate relationships with campus and community partners to develop or highlight opportunities for involvement in experiential programming within I&E. Act as a liaison and resource to stakeholders across campus, including the Fuqua School of Business, Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, the Graduate School, Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke Law School, Pratt School of Engineering and the Divinity School. (15%)

Supervise and coordinate the work of designated employees, including full-time staff, paid and volunteer student assistants and interns. Manage personnel activities to meet university and departmental objectives; direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, training and development, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, vacation schedules, and disciplinary actions. Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures, particularly as they relate to educational programs, FERPA compliance and human resource management. (15%)

Provide oversight and management to the I&E Student Programs team to plan, coordinate, and implement supportive programs, activities, and workshops for students interested in innovation and entrepreneurship. (10%)

Assess and evaluate the programs implemented, and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress in meeting goals and objectives, noting positive impacts, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations and conclusions. (5%)

In collaboration with I&E’s Development Program Director and other I&E leadership, assist in the development of giving opportunities, the preparation of written proposals and grant applications, and in stewardship for individual and corporate philanthropic giving to student programs in innovation and entrepreneurship. (10%)

Prepare, edit, distribute, and manage content (e.g., print, internet, social media) for marketing and communications program activities, in coordination with the I&E Communications team. (5%)

Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations for I&E innovation and entrepreneurship programs; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds. (5%)

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires knowledge of science methods and educational principles, curriculum development, and instructional design, as well as analytical, organizational, and communications skills generally acquired through completion of a masters degree program. Ph.D. preferred.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of five years experience within a OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE university, preferably to include direct experience teaching with undergraduate and/or graduate students, conducting and/or supervising research, and working with faculty to develop and improve curricular requirements within a department or school.

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B. Duke, created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.Duke Campus

As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent both physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus became known as East Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian architecture. West Campus, Gothic in style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. East Campus served as home of the Woman's College of Duke University until 1972, when the men's and women's undergraduate colleges merged. Both men and women undergraduates now enroll in either the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering. In 1995, East Campus became the home for all first-year students.

Duke maintains a historic affiliation with the United Methodist Church.
