Managing Director, Duke Angel Network

Background

The mission of the Duke Angel Network (DAN) is to support the global Duke entrepreneurial community with an angel investing platform and co-investment fund that engages and leverages the power of the global Duke network. The DAN operational team and investment platform exists within the Duke Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative at Duke University. The DAN team partners with Duke-affiliated angel investors to source and curate investment opportunities in Duke affiliated companies. An online investment platform allows angel members to easily share deal opportunities, collaborate, complete diligence and close transactions. Investments are made directly between angel investors and portfolio companies. The DAN team also operates the Duke Innovation Fund (DIF), which is used to invest alongside the angel network and scale the capital available for portfolio companies. All capital gains from DIF investments are returned to the fund and reinvested alongside angel investors. The most important aspect of the Duke Angel Network is the active engagement and matching of Duke expertise with portfolio companies to support growth and success. Occupational Summary

The Duke Angel Network Managing Director will be responsible for all aspects of the Duke Angel Network, including investor relations, investment strategy, curation and oversight of new venture investments, oversight of investor meetings, supervision of diligence team, responsibility for web sites and marketing materials, and performance of funded entities. The Managing Director of the Duke Angel Network will be responsible for the Duke Innovation Fund, a leverage fund raised through philanthropy. managing relationships with sister angel networks as part of the Triangle Venture Alliance and other allied entities in the Triangle Community. This position will report to the Director of the Duke Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative.

Work Performed

    Management of Duke Angel Network membership, including recruitment of Duke Angel Network members and management of member relations, providing high quality customer service through personalized outreach to ensure positive member engagement and retention.Oversight of all aspects of the investment management process including sourcing, screening, diligence, analysis and decision-making process.Oversight of Portfolio Management; Provide support and resources to portfolio companiesOversight of the planning and execution of Duke Angel Network convenings, such as the Duke Angel Network Annual Meeting, membership recruitment events and pitch eventsOversight of all aspects of Communications, including timely and appropriate communication with members regarding reporting, new investment opportunities, portfolio management and engagement opportunities. In coordination with the Duke Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative Communications team, maintain website, generate collateral and organize newsletter.Management of the Duke Innovation Fund; in coordination with the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative Development Program Director and Duke University Development, participate in the development of strategies surrounding philanthropy to the Duke Innovation Fund, support prospect cultivation, solicitation and stewardship as neededOversight of Duke Angel Network Operations; Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds; oversight of technology platforms

    Supervise and coordinate the work of designated employees, including full-time and part-time staff and diligence team of student fellows. Manage personnel activities to meet university and departmental objectives; direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, training and development, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, vacation schedules, and disciplinary actions. Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures, particularly as they relate to educational programs, FERPA compliance and human resource management.

    Maintain liaison with internal and external organizations to explore new opportunities and areas of potential enhancement to existing activities, particularly angel affinity networks associated with the Triangle Venture Alliance and other allied organizations in the Triangle Community; represent the Duke Angel Network and the Duke Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative at national conferences and events.

Preferences

    The Managing Director of the Duke Angel Network will have 5+ years investing experience in early stage technology, most preferably from academia.Significant experience and expertise in technology translation, preferably in multiple sectors, and translation consulting is required. Applicants will have significant experience managing investor relationships, sourcing, performing diligence, structuring transactions and supporting investments, especially in early stage technology companies.MBA is preferred.
Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Accounting or a closely related field.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of nine years progressively responsible experience in administrative management, to include proficiency in budgeting, grants and contracts, personnel supervision and space and facilities management. A Master's degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Accounting or a closely related field may substitute for two years of required experience. Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B. Duke, created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.Duke Campus

As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent both physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus became known as East Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian architecture. West Campus, Gothic in style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. East Campus served as home of the Woman's College of Duke University until 1972, when the men's and women's undergraduate colleges merged. Both men and women undergraduates now enroll in either the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering. In 1995, East Campus became the home for all first-year students.
