This position is for the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, a program of the Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) at Duke University. The marketing director is responsible for developing, planning, implementing, and measuring the effectiveness of all marketing, outreach, communications, visibility, advertising, press, and public relations activities for the four-day festival and year-round events. The marketing department supports the efforts of the programming, production, and development departments and is responsible for the festival’s brand (design + execution) including all print and online media, signage, merchandise, multimedia content, and collateral.

The marketing director reports to the festival director. The ideal candidate for this position is an energetic self-starter and team player with impeccable attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to manage tight deadlines with multiple stakeholders. The candidate should have a working knowledge of social media platforms and analytic tools. Knowledge of documentary and independent film is helpful but a sincere interest and willingness to educate yourself is mandatory.

This is a 12-month, full-time position, with full Duke University benefits. Night and weekend availability are required at certain times of the year.

Responsibilities

Administrative (10%)

    Supervise and collaborate with Full Frame’s communications manager.Manage department budget including annual and monthly tracking.Design and disseminate attendee surveys and compile demographic and market data and analyze results to inform strategies and improve workflow.

Outreach (10%)

    Lead the management, coordination, and execution of Full Frame’s year-round screenings; assist with management and execution of partner screenings and other events.Lead outreach, recruiting, visibility, and communication for Full Frame’s educational program participants.Oversee the planning and execution of the festival’s annual Pregame Party and other outreach activities with the purpose of creating strategic partnerships between Full Frame and the local community and business leaders.Build and maintain relationships with local organizations, vendors, sponsors, and influencers. Represent Full Frame at marketing and outreach events such as the Discover Durham Festival Roundtable group, Duke’s social media working group, Duke Communicators, Duke Arts Communicators, etc. Work closely with CDS communications team and Duke University’s Communications office to effectively promote Full Frame through these channels.

Advertising (10%)

    Develop strategy for annual print, web, radio, and television advertising and track deliverable milestones and analytics.Facilitate trade and/or sponsorship opportunities for advertisements.

Design (15%)

    Develop and oversee adherence to official brand guidelines (style, colors, fonts) in all Full Frame outputs for the annual four-day festival and year-round screenings and events including signage, print publications, social media, digital assets, and multimedia content.Develop and oversee the design of promotional materials for Full Frame development and fundraising including fundraising campaigns.Manage visual brand on the festival landscape with signage, merch table visibility, schedule grids, etc.Oversee the design of (and order) merchandise and giveaways.

Press + Public Relations (20%)

    Create and execute annual press/PR strategy including pitching, researching, scheduling, copy editing.Write and distribute press releases.Oversee festival press accreditation process including creating and disseminating applications, liaising with applicants, and communicating with attending press before, during, and after the festival.Track and compile press pitches and press hits before, during, and after the festival.Build and maintain relationships with local and national press. Execute strategic placement of festival stories to raise visibility of the festival year-round.Collaborate with the programming and production departments to collect and distribute filmmaker press kits and film assets before and during the festival to key press.

Communications (web, e-news, social, photo, video) (35%)

    Write, design, schedule, and distribute e-newsletters to national, local, and donor audiences. Collaborate with external vendor to maintain fullframefest.org. Write copy and oversee the design and production of web and multimedia graphics, photo, and video content. Conduct recurring review of metrics via Google Analytics and compile monthly report on growth and trends.Supervise strategy and content across all of Full Frame’s social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vimeo, SmugMug) in accordance with the voice and brand of the organization. Monitor and analyze performance and trends on social media. Conduct recurring review of metrics for social media and compile monthly report on growth and trends.Produce festival video assets including the festival’s preshow trailer, seating slides, and reels.Facilitate livestream videos, liaise with production vendor, oversee the design and distribution of promotional materials including posters, signage, and onscreen assets.Recruit and manage the festival’s volunteer media team.

    Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere, and LightroomMicrosoft OfficeWordPress (experience with HTML is desirable)Video editing skills are desirable, preferably in Adobe Premiere Pro

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires one year experience in marketing, advertising, media, OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE promotions, graphic arts, public relations, sales, or other related background to acquire skills necessary to plan, develop and implement marketing strategies in one or more specialty areas.

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B.
