The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) is a self-supporting unit within the University of California. Funding is generated through fees collected from a diverse, complex, and ever-changing student population. Part-time instructor positions are on a course by course contracted basis. This is NOT a faculty position.

Part-time, temporary assignments are on an as-needed basis. This is an ONGOING recruitment. We accept part-time instructor applications throughout the year. When the division has a need to fill, we refer to the pool of applications on file. We are looking specifically for instructors who are qualified to teach courses per the Job Description as early as Fall Quarter 2019.

International University Programs, within UCI's Division of Continuing Education, seeks applicants for part-time teaching positions in our quarterly programs for international students. Teachers will join a collegial, professional teaching environment that prizes excellence and has welcomed and instructed international students for more than 30 years. Our students hold full-time study visas and focus primarily on building academic and study skills essential for university and graduate school success in the U.S. The vast majority of our students are preparing for entrance to American undergraduate and graduate programs. Classes include undergraduate and graduate American and academic culture preparation skills, research writing and writing for specific academic disciplines (STEM). Students take these classes in conjunction with UCI university-level concurrent enrollment courses.

All classes are on-ground classes, with additional support via Canvas. Classes meet Monday-Friday and are scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum requirements include:
  • M.A., preferably in TESL, educational assessment, or related field, in hand;
  • At least three years teaching experience with international students, primarily in undergraduate and graduate-level study skills and American academic culture, academic writing for research and scientific writing, English for Specific Purposes (STEAM), and American cultural topics;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of courses, English proficiency levels, and skills;
  • Native fluency/command of standard English;
  • Eligibility to work full-time in the United States.

In addition to the above qualifications, the preferred candidate also has:
  • Proficiency in a second language;
  • Teaching or living experience abroad;
  • Experience utilizing technology, including teaching hybrid/online courses, to support the face-to-face classroom;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to cultural differences;
  • Evident charisma to engage and inspire a variety of international learners of English.

RESPONSIBILITIES (include, but are not limited to, the following):
ϖ Teach 3-10 hours per week for 10-week courses, as scheduled; frequently includes evening teaching
ϖ Develop course materials, including syllabi, instructional materials and assessments
ϖ Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as needed to enhance in-class learning
ϖ Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes, and assign grades
ϖ Report students' midterm progress and post final student grades to the transcript system by set deadlines
ϖ Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner
ϖ Handle student inquiries about final grades and consult with the academic unit as needed
ϖ Collaborate with the academic unit and other instructors as needed
ϖ Contribute to academic coordination responsibilities, as needed
