Departmental Overview
UC Berkeley Extension is a one of the largest and oldest continuing education operations thriving in the United States, offering thousands of professional development and personal enrichment classes and serving tens of thousands of students annually.

In its role providing marketing services for international students, Extension is seeking a recruitment specialist. The role works closely with a team of recruitment specialists to cultivate exceptional candidates for a mix of different programs from initial inquiry through application submission or initial registration. The ideal candidate will move seamlessly between providing high-level coaching and extremely technical guidance on application and registration guidelines.

  • Provides substantive information on admissions requirements for UC Berkeley Extension international programs and curricula, and advises/guides prospective students through decision-making and application processes
  • Positions the programs through phone, email, web and in-person interactions, communicating its value to target audiences, promoting the Berkeley brand and the Berkeley concept of learning.
  • Following a standard communications model, proactively discovers needs of prospective students and advises/guides on the program, curriculum, fees, admissions requirements, application procedures, etc.
  • Is proactive in identifying potential barriers within the student enrollment process and initiates steps resulting in resolution.
  • Supports communications with others participating in the recruitment and admissions process and refers prospective students to other parties as necessary.
  • Uses professional knowledge and perspective to relate to prospective students to establish professional rapport and add to the student experience.
  • Secures applications from prospective students to reach planned enrollment each term.
  • Maintains an active caseload of prospective students, agents, partners and other stakeholders and tracks activity via a variety of channels, including Salesforce.
  • Provides information about UC Berkeley Extension international programs and UC Berkeley overall, specifically one-on-one and to groups. Works with supervisor to develop communication and outreach strategy for recruitment
  • Works with information from the university and other stakeholders, as well as information gathered on competitors, to develop communication strategy for recruitment.
  • Implements promotional plans and recommends potential approaches and media strategies.
  • Formulates regular outreach activities; prioritizes daily tasks based on recruiting timeline and prospective student stages.
  • Serves as liaison between students, parents, college/universities, community agencies, and UC Berkeley college/school/department.
  • Communicates and exchanges information between students and relevant Extension colleagues and departments for the purpose of maximizing the student recruitment process, as well as student success and retention. Enables student access to information on program options and facilitates communication with stakeholders. Also provides support as needed in areas such as maintaining partner and agent networks.
  • Coordinates, implements and conducts trainings, orientations and other information-sharing in support of student success.
  • Serves as liaison between students and student support, including technology support, career services, campus policies and procedures and other resources, to maximize student satisfaction and retention.
  • Assesses and anticipates students' problems and needs, refers students to appropriate student support and conducts follow-up.
  • Facilitates student engagement with peers, faculty, resource providers and the university.
  • Provides student guidance for appropriate and expected methods of communication with peers, faculty, resource providers and the university.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of an online student community (outside of the classroom) and other tools for student-to-student collaboration (web conferencing, instant messaging, etc.), cultivating a student-centered environment.
  • Evaluates services to determine impact of recruitment activities with development of new and refined strategies for maximizing outreach.
  • Provides support for recruitment travel on all levels of preparation, including the packing and transport of collateral, assist in related activities such as preserving student leads, collecting travel expenses, and inputting relevant information into Salesforce and other data resources.
  • Gathers and analyzes data; prepares reports of operational activities, evaluation of services, etc.
  • Maintains an updated database of prospective students, collecting data to determine their needs, and managing and tracking them through the pipeline.
  • Pull data reports to help supervisor assess recruitment progress, adjust communication strategies and forecast yield.

    Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse student populations, especially mid-career professionals pursuing certificates to advance or enhance their careers.
  • Desire to help students achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals.
  • Working knowledge of Extension's certificate programs, including competitors, curricula, admissions requirements, and financial aid, etc.
  • Working knowledge of issues surrounding online programs.
  • Working knowledge of recruitment and student services for adult learners.
  • Working knowledge of developing recruitment strategies preferred.
  • Superior communication and listening skills in print, web and email and over the phone and in-person.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with administrators, schools, universities, community organizations and other institutions.
  • The ability to interpret policies and procedures to prospective applicants and the public.
  • Ability to screen and evaluate a program's overall fit for student's goals.
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of communication models and recommend alternatives or refinement.
  • Ability to conduct trainings and provide guidance to students, in-person, over the phone and in writing.
  • Ability to serve as a liaison between prospective and current students, representatives from partner academic units and Extension administrative staff
  • Ability to assess and anticipate students' needs.
  • Working knowledge of customer relationship management systems.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of UC Berkeley Extension and the higher education market and industry.
  • Customer service or advising experience in an educational environment entailing one on one interaction is highly preferred.

    Salary & Benefits
    Hourly rate is commensurate with experience within the range of $21.70 - $33.09.
